As a counselor, I believe the client is the expert in their own life. My role is to support the client toward the goals that are identified using evidence-based practices from various methods of counseling that best suit the client’s needs. I typically draw from the therapeutic modalities of cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, person-centered therapy, solution-focused therapy, the Gottman method, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR.) I will look for patterns, areas of inconsistency, and thinking errors and challenge the client in these areas. I will encourage the client to express and feel their emotions as this will have great benefit in the counseling process.
