Frequently asked questions about promethazine

What is promethazine?

Promethazine (generic for Phenergan) is a prescription medication used to treat nausea and vomiting. It is often used to prevent motion sickness and can be prescribed to alleviate nausea associated with acute migraines.

At its base level, promethazine is an antihistamine. Antihistamines, as the name suggests, block histamines - the substance often responsible for triggering allergic reactions. This means promethazine is also effective in treating seasonal allergy symptoms like coughing, itching, and runny nose. Sometimes, it is even used as a sedative before and after surgeries.

What is promethazine used to treat?

Promethazine is used to treat two distinct symptoms: nausea and allergies.

Promethazine is often prescribed for its antiemetic qualities. Anthemic means that it reduces nausea and vomiting. While this can be used to treat motion sickness, on the one hand, doctors also use promethazine to alleviate nausea in patients after surgery.

In addition to its antiemetic properties, promethazine also acts as an antihistamine - a family of drugs that treats allergies and allergic reactions. Your doctor may prescribe oral promethazine to treat seasonal allergies, rhinitis, pink eye (conjunctivitis), skin rash, and anaphylactic reactions (after the initial reaction has been controlled).

Sometimes, doctors use promethazine as a sedative before or after surgery.

How does promethazine work?

Promethaziine is an antihistamine. This means that it blocks histamines - a chemical your body produces that triggers allergic reactions - to alleviate symptoms of seasonal allergies.

Promethazine also belongs to a family of drugs known as antiemetics. These drugs are effective in treating nausea and vomiting. They work by blocking chemicals called neurotransmitters, which communicate the feeling of nausea to your brain.

What are common side effects of promethazine?

While there are some common side effects associated with promethazine, it is important to remember that your doctor prescribed this medication because its ability to alleviate nausea and allergies outweighs any adverse effects it may cause.

Common side effects of promethazine include:

Drowsiness Dizziness Constipation Blurred vision Dry mouth

Rare but serious side effects of promethazine may include: Fainting Slow heartbeat Mood changes Uncontrollable movements Difficulty urinating Signs of infection Stomach pain Easy bleeding Persistent nausea Yellowing of the eyes and skin

Very serious side effects are even more uncommon. If you experience an allergic reaction, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing, call your doctor right away.

In extremely rare cases, promethazine may cause neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Symptoms include fever, muscle ache, severe fatigue or confusion, sweating, irregular heartbeat, dark urine, or kidney problems. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of neuroleptic malignant syndrome, call 911 right away.

This is not a complete list of side effects. For more information on adverse reactions you may experience while taking promethazine, please visit the National Institutes of Health’s DailyMed webpage.

How long does it take for promethazine to work?

Promethazine will begin to work about 20 minutes after you take it. It usually lasts between 4 and 6 hours.

What is a typical starting dose of promethazine?

Typical starting doses of promethazine depend on the condition it is being used to treat. Your doctor may also consider your medical history and other prescription medications you may be taking. Talk to your doctor about the optimal starting dose for your needs.
