Triamterene is a prescription diuretic medication used to treat edema (fluid retention) in patients with congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney disease. It is also occasionally used in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

Triamterene works by blocking the absorption of sodium in the kidneys, which helps reduce fluid levels in the body. It may also help lower cholesterol levels, as well as reduce the risk of heart failure and kidney damage.

Triamterene is available under the brand name Dyrenium and comes in the form of a capsule to take by mouth.

Triamterene is used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention. It works by blocking the reabsorption of sodium in the kidneys, causing increased urine production, which helps reduce fluid retention in the body.
Triamterene belongs to a class of medications called diuretics, which reduce the amount of water in the body by increasing the flow of urine. It helps your body to excrete excess water and sodium while maintaining potassium. Sodium and potassium are two electrolytes that maintain blood volume and fluid, and health issues can arise when either of these electrolyte levels are off-balance.

Common side effects of triamterene include:

  • vomiting
  • dizziness
  • headache
  • electrolyte disturbances

This is not a complete list of adverse effects – though these are among the most common. Seek medical attention right away if you experience any of the following symptoms while taking triamterene:

  • muscle weakness or cramps
  • slow or irregular heartbeat
  • diarrhea
  • rash
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • upset stomach or loss of appetite
  • extreme tiredness
  • unusual bleeding or bruising
  • lack of energy
  • pain in the upper right part of the stomach
  • yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • flu-like symptoms
  • sore throat
  • severe dry mouth
  • unusual bruising or bleeding

As with all prescription medication, be sure to inform the prescribing doctor about any medical conditions you have been previously diagnosed with, as well as any medication/ supplements you are currently taking before starting treatment with triamterene. Triamterene can interact with other forms of medication and substances, causing potentially serious side effects. In addition, let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant before starting treatment with this medication.

Triamterene comes in the form of a capsule to take by mouth. Dosing frequency will vary depending on your diagnosis, typically ranging from 1-2 times per day. However, you should take the medication exactly as your healthcare provider prescribes. Do not discontinue or increase your dosage of triamterene without consulting with your provider first. If you begin to experience adverse side effects while taking this medication, like those listed above, inform your provider right away.

Triamterene should be stored in a closed container at room temperature, away from extreme heat, extreme cold, moisture, and direct light, and kept out of the reach of children.

Triamterene is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
