Frequently asked questions about Paxlovid

Paxlovid is a prescription medication approved by the FDA for the treatment of mild to moderate coronavirus (COVID-19) infections. This medication is currently available to adult patients, and pediatric patients (children over the age of 12 who weigh more than 88 lbs.) who have tested positive for COVID-19, and who are at risk of experiencing a progression of the infection that may result in hospitalization or death.

Paxlovid is only prescribed to patients who have received a positive test for COVID-19 (meaning that they have been infected by the disease). It will not be prescribed as a measure to prevent exposure to the virus, nor is it a substitute for vaccination against COVID-19.

Paxlovid has recently been approved by the FDA to treat mild-to-moderate cases of the coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19) in adults and children over the age of 12 who are at high risk of being hospitalized. It is only prescribed to patients who have received a positive test for COVID-19. This medication is not indicated for use as a prophylactic (preventative) against the disease.

Paxlovid is only available via prescriptions from a qualified health care provider. It is not available as an over-the-counter medication.

Paxlovid actually consists of two separate drugs, prescribed and administered simultaneously, for the treatment of COVID-19. The two drugs that are taken at the same time are nirmatrelvir and ritonavir. Nirmatrelvir inhibits the SARS-CoV-2 protein, which prevents the virus from replicating. As a supplement, ritonavir slows the breakdown of nirmatrelvir after it has been ingested, to allow the drug to last longer in the body.

Nirmatrelvir and ritonavir are prescribed together as a treatment for COVID-19. They are not meant to be taken individually, or at doses other than what is prescribed by your doctor. Do not take one drug without the other, and do not discontinue the use of Paxlovid, or change your dosage, without consulting with your doctor first.

Less than 1% of subjects who have taken Paxlovid experience a change in taste, diarrhea, muscle aches, or a change in blood pressure. These adverse effects are rare, and the FDA has approved this medication because the benefits of its use as a treatment for severe COVID-19 infections outweigh its risks.

Paxlovid is not recommended for patients with severe renal (kidney) or hepatic (liver) impairment. If you have been diagnosed with a kidney or liver condition, talk to your health care provider before beginning treatment with Paxlovid. Additionally, talk to your doctor about any medication you may be taking before starting treatment with Paxlovid. Paxlovid may interact with other drugs (notably CYP3a inhibitors), causing adverse reactions.

As with all prescription medication, be sure to inform the prescribing doctor about any medical conditions you have been previously diagnosed with and any medication/ supplements you are currently taking before starting treatment with Paxlovid. Paxlovid can interact with other forms of medication and substances, causing potentially serious side effects. In addition, let your doctor know if you are planning to become pregnant, are pregnant, or are currently breastfeeding.

Paxlovid is administered as three oral tablets (2 nirmatrelvir and 1 ritonavir tablet) to be taken twice daily for five days, with or without food. For the medication to work, both nirmatrelvir and ritonavir must be taken simultaneously.

Paxlovid has not been authorized for use longer than 5 consecutive days. Additionally, treatment with Paxlovid should be started within 5 days of your first symptoms. Ideally, individuals begin treatment as soon as possible after testing positive for COVID-19.

Do not discontinue or increase your dosage of Paxlovid without consulting your doctor first. Take the medication exactly as prescribed, and inform your doctor if you begin to experience any side effects while taking the medication.

Paxlovid is a prescription medication that is authorized for the treatment of mild-to-moderate COVID cases in patients over the age of 12 and over 88 pounds.

Paxlovid is not prescribed to all patients who have tested positive for COVID-19. Instead, it is prescribed for patients who meet the age and weight criteria and are at risk of severe illness. Some additional risk factors for severe illness include being over 60 years of age, being overweight, having a history of smoking, and having a previous diagnosis of immunosuppressive disease. This is not a complete list of risk factors, however.

Paxlovid is not prescribed to all patients, nor is it prescribed as a treatment for current severe infections.

Before starting treatment with Paxlovid, talk to your doctor about your health history and any medication you may be currently taking. There are many drugs that are contra-indicated with Paxlovid use (meaning that they may cause serious - even fatal reactions - if taken at the same time).

Note that all prescriptions for Paxlovid are based on the discretion of your health care provider and must meet the conditions listed above.
