Fungal infections are usually treated with a course of antifungal medication. Common forms of antifungal medications include:
- OTC topical medications: Many forms of antifungal medication are available over-the-counter as a cream or ointment. These medications are applied to the affected area as directed, and can effectively treat most mild to moderate fungal skin infections.
- Prescription topical medication: If you are experiencing a severe infection, or if OTC medication has not effectively treated the condition, your doctor may prescribe a more potent prescription topical medication. Follow your doctor’s orders while using these products and do not stop using them until the prescription has run its course, or your doctor confirms the infection has gone away. The infectious fungus may still be present in the skin even if you are not experiencing symptoms, so it is important that you continue treatment even if symptoms have subsided.
- Oral medication: Oral antifungal medication may be prescribed by your doctor if you are experiencing a severe infection, or if other forms of treatment have been unsuccessful.
