Frequently asked questions about Paxlovid

Medically reviewed by:Dr. Allison Edwards, MD

Good news! If deemed clinically appropriate, providers on Sesame can write a prescription for Paxlovid to be picked up near you – often within the same day! Simply talk to a clinician and get your online doctor prescription or refill ordered right away for fast and convenient pickup from a pharmacy of your choice.

Note that all prescriptions are at the discretion of your healthcare provider.

Paxlovid is a prescription medication that is authorized for the treatment of mild-to-moderate COVID cases in patients over the age of 12 and over 88 pounds.

Paxlovid is not prescribed to all patients who have tested positive for COVID-19. Instead, it is prescribed for patients who meet the age and weight criteria and are at risk of severe illness. Some additional risk factors for severe illness include being over 60 years of age, being overweight, having a history of smoking, and having a previous diagnosis of immunosuppressive disease. This is not a complete list of risk factors, however.

Paxlovid is not prescribed to all patients, nor is it prescribed as a treatment for current severe infections.

Before starting treatment with Paxlovid, talk to your doctor about your health history and any medication you may be currently taking. There are many drugs that are contra-indicated with Paxlovid use (meaning that they may cause serious - even fatal reactions - if taken at the same time).

Note that all prescriptions for Paxlovid are based on the discretion of your health care provider and must meet the conditions listed above.

Yes, Sesame makes it easier than ever to get a new prescription or refill an existing prescription online. To discuss a new online prescription or refill, book a video visit with a doctor or nurse on Sesame to discuss a new online prescription or refill. Clinicians on Sesame can prescribe drugs that help treat infections, allergies, high blood pressure, and more.

Note that providers on Sesame cannot prescribe controlled substances.

Sesame video prescription refill appointments are available 24/7 in all 50 states and can be used whenever you need to talk to a health care provider about a prescription refill.

Online prescription refills are up to the discretion of your provider. If you’re a new patient, most providers will write a prescription for 30 days and may want to schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure that the medication is effective. If you’re a returning patient, your provider may prescribe for a longer period of time.

Prescriptions and prescription refills on Sesame are exclusively cash-pay. We do not accept insurance for the provider appointment or the medication. If a clinician sends your prescription to your local pharmacy, you can pick it up and pay with a method of your choice, including your FSA or HSA card, prescription card, cash, credit, and more.

Most insurance plans do not require prior authorization for medication coverage. When you go to the pharmacy to pick up your prescription, the pharmacist can use the insurance information they have on file, or you can give them your insurance information for coverage.

Health insurance plans publish a formulary for the drugs covered by the plan and the corresponding drug and copay prices. Check with your insurance provider to find out what drugs require authorization and the specific coverage information regarding the medication you’ve been prescribed.

For patients who book a weight management service through Sesame’s online weight loss management program, providers can assist with prior insurance authorization requests for your medication. For more information, visit our video weight loss program page.

It is helpful to have proof of a prior prescription before your refill visit. Depending on the medication, some Sesame providers may require proof of a prior prescription before refilling it. Your provider may ask to see a picture of an old pill bottle or check for previous prescriptions from another Sesame provider. In some instances, your Sesame provider may also be able to access a national pharmacy system to see prescriptions from non-Sesame providers.
