About Sinus infection
A sinus infection (sinusitis) is the inflammation of the tissues lining the sinuses. Your sinuses are small spaces in the bone structure between your eyes, behind your cheekbones, and in your forehead. They produce mucus that helps keep your nose moist and clean. When your sinuses become swollen because of allergies, the common cold, polyps, or a deviated septum, this mucus builds up and eventually causes an infection.
Sinus infections can make it difficult to breathe through your nose. Common sinus infection symptoms include:
Swelling around your eyes and face
Nasal congestion
Sinus pressure
Headache
Throbbing facial pain
Sore throat
Runny nose
Bad breath
Most cases of acute sinusitis heal within 7-10 days on their own unless a bacterial infection develops. Acute sinusitis can usually be cured with simple home remedies, but chronic sinus infections may last several months and require medical treatment.
Treatment Options
Below are common treatment options for sinus infections. During your appointment, talk to your doctor about what treatment plan is right for you.
In most cases, sinusitis is caused by viral infections or allergies. These types of sinus infections tend to improve without medication after a week or so. Symptoms like headaches and congestion can typically be improved with over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamines, decongestants, nasal steroids, and pain relievers.
Occasionally, sinus infections can be caused by bacteria. Before assessing the need for antibiotics, your doctor may wait and observe whether your acute sinusitis worsens. Antibiotics may be prescribed if your symptoms are severe, progressive, or chronic.
Most cases of sinus infection can be treated with simple at-home methods. These include:
- Rinse your sinus cavities: Use a neti pot or a saline nasal spray to help flush mucus out of your sinuses.
- Inhale warm steam: Take a hot shower or drape a towel over your head and breathe in the vapor from a bowl of hot water. This helps moisturize the nose, drain mucus, and relieve the symptoms of a sinus infection.
- Use a humidifier: This will add moisture to the air in your room or home.
- Apply a warm compress: A warm compress applied to your nose and forehead may help relieve sinus pain and congestion.
If your sinus infections are a result of allergies, immunotherapy can help address the underlying cause of congestion. Immunotherapy introduces small, measured doses of an allergen to your body to improve the body’s tolerance to that irritant. Gradually, this therapy should reduce your body’s reaction to the allergen. Immunotherapy may not provide immediate relief for a sinus infection, but it can help prevent recurring sinus infections if you struggle with chronic sinusitis.

Yes, you can get online sinus infection treatment and medication by booking a telehealth visit with one of Sesame’s board-certified healthcare providers. During your visit, your provider will assess your symptoms and health concerns, determine a treatment plan, and send a prescription to your preferred pharmacy for same-day pickup if appropriate.
Do you accept health insurance?
No. Sesame does not accept insurance in order to keep prices low and transparent – the upfront price you see next to your provider’s name is the price you pay!
However, you can pay for your online visit using your Health Savings Account (HSA) card or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) card if you have one.
If you do have insurance and are prescribed medication during your appointment, your prescription may be covered depending on your plan.
You will also receive a prescription savings card from Sesame if medication is prescribed. The prescription savings card is often cheaper than a co-pay on your prescription, so we recommend comparing your insurance co-pay to the savings card price before filling your prescription.
