There is currently no medical treatment for a hepatitis A infection. Instead, use these self-care methods to prevent spreading the disease and manage your symptoms:
- Rest. Hepatitis A can cause fatigue and fever symptoms. Because of this, it is recommended that you abstain from daily tasks and strenuous activity until your symptoms have subsided. This can help speed up recovery time.
- Avoid alcohol. Hepatitis A infects and inflames your liver. Avoid alcohol and medication use until the disease has passed to minimize your risk of liver damage.
- Abstain from sex. Hepatitis A is easily transmitted through close contact. If you or your partner is infected with the HAV, avoid sexual activity until symptoms of the disease have been absent for several days.
- Wash your hands. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water for at least 20 seconds after using the restroom, and preparing food. Do not prepare food for others if you are currently sick with a hepatitis A infection, as the disease is easily transmittable through contaminated food.
