About Eyelash growth treatment

You may be exploring eyelash growth treatments if you are experiencing thin or brittle eyelashes. There are a number of reasons why eyelash loss or sparsity can occur, including:

  • Aging, since hair growth cycles slow as you get older
  • Sensitive skin or allergic reactions to false eyelash adhesives, mascara, eyeliner, lash lift chemicals, and other beauty products
  • Autoimmune disorders like alopecia or lupus
  • Chemotherapy or radiation, which can cause lash breakage and fallout
  • Hormone changes, including those caused by menopause or pregnancy, can reduce hair growth
  • Tension or pulling from curlers or eyelash extensions, which can cause breakage and hair loss
  • Trichotillomania, a compulsive hair-pulling disorder
  • Vitamin deficiencies, including lack of biotin, vitamin E, vitamin D, or iron, can weaken lashes

If you have short or thinning lashes, eyelash growth treatment may be an option for you. These treatments usually contain prostaglandin analogs (PGAs). The PGAs work by prolonging the hair growth phase of your eyelashes. This means that more of your lashes grow at the same time, leading to longer, fuller lashes.

Currently, Latisse (bimatoprost) is the only prescription medication that is FDA-approved for eyelash growth. It's also used to treat glaucoma and several other eye diseases. The medication is applied to the upper lash line. Users typically see longer, fuller, and darker lashes within 8-16 weeks.

The best treatment option for eyelash growth depends on the underlying causes of your eyelash loss and overall eye health. During your Sesame appointment, you can speak with your provider to determine the best approach.
  • Latisse (bimatoprost) is the only FDA-approved medication for eyelash growth.
  • Castor oil is a common at-home remedy for healthier eyelashes. While it won’t make your lashes grow longer, the moisturizing effect of the oil may make your eyelashes appear fuller.
  • Over-the-counter lash enhancers and brow serums often boast ingredients like peptides, keratin, hyaluronic acid and amino acids for longer lashes. However, these products haven’t been evaluated by the FDA for efficacy or safety, so it’s best to speak with your ophthalmologist or another licensed healthcare professional before using these options.

Thin eyelashes can be caused by a range of factors, including medical conditions, hormonal changes, sensitive skin, stress, lash extensions and more.

If you’re not sure why you’re experiencing eyelash loss, book an in-person or online skin consult with a licensed healthcare provider. They can help you identify the cause of your symptoms and come up with a personalized treatment plan.

Prescription lash-enhancing serum contains an active ingredient called bimatoprost, which extends the anagen phase of your eyelash growth cycle. The anagen phase is when your hair follicles are actively producing new lashes – the longer the phase, the more eyelashes are produced. This leads to fuller lashes and increases your lash length.

Bimatoprost (the active ingredient in Latisse) is a type of prostaglandin. While prostaglandins can help improve lash growth, they can also cause unwanted side effects, such as:

  • Redness and irritation, especially if you have sensitive eyes
  • Darkening or pigmentation around the eyes
  • Vision changes
  • Eyelid drooping (also known as ptosis)
  • Periorbital fat loss, which can lead to a sunken effect around the eyes

If you’re using Latisse or another product that contains prostaglandins and begin to experience any of these side effects, you should stop treatment and talk to your healthcare provider right away.

To see if prescription eyelash growth treatment is best for you, talk with a licensed medical provider. They can offer personalized medical advice catered to your needs and prescribe medication if appropriate.
