- Ice. Ice the affected joint or area to reduce swelling caused by bone spurs and relieve pain.
- OTC Medication: Your provider may recommend widely available over-the-counter pain medication such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), or naproxen sodium (Aleve) to relieve discomfort caused by bone spurs. Take this medication as directed, and do not increase dosage without talking to your provider.
- Weight loss. Excess weight can put added pressure on your joints and bones. Maintaining a healthy weight can help reduce pain and mobility loss caused by bone spurs.
- Shoes. Wear supportive shoes with appropriate inserts if recommended by your doctor. This footwear can take pressure off your joints and reduce the impact caused by walking, running, and other activities.
