About Ptsd

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after a traumatic event, such as combat, natural disaster, sexual assault, abuse, or the sudden loss of a loved one. You don't need to personally witness or experience a traumatic experience to develop PTSD; it can develop after hearing that a close friend or family member has experienced trauma as well.

PTSD affects millions of people and can lead to intense emotional and physical distress. Common symptoms of PTSD include:

  • Flashbacks
  • Nightmares
  • Panic attacks
  • Emotional numbness
  • Negative thoughts
  • Increased irritability
  • Heightened anxiety

When left untreated, the effects of trauma can seriously disrupt your life and your relationships. If you have concerns about PTSD, a mental health care provider on Sesame can help. During your telehealth visit, your provider will review your health history and can help determine if your symptoms are a result of PTSD. They can also recommend the best treatment options for your well-being, which may include in-person or online therapy, psychiatry, medication, or a combination of these approaches.

Treatment Options
Below are potential PTSD treatment options that may be recommended or prescribed by your Sesame provider. Please note that doctors and clinicians on Sesame will not prescribe controlled substances.

The FDA has approved two medications specifically for the treatment of PTSD: sertraline (Zoloft) and paroxetine (Paxil). These medications belong to a class of medications known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and may help reduce symptoms like anxiety, fear, and intrusive thoughts.

However, there isn’t one “best” medication for the treatment of PTSD. If your provider determines that medication is appropriate for your PTSD, they will consider all of your symptoms and your medical history to help you determine which option is best for you.

Yes. If deemed clinically appropriate, an online doctor or provider on Sesame can prescribe medication and other treatments for PTSD. Any prescriptions will be sent to a pharmacy of your choice for pickup.

Sesame also offers affordable medication management through Mental Health Rx, a $79 monthly subscription that includes prescriptions + refills for PTSD medication if appropriate, video visits & unlimited messaging.

Post-traumatic stress disorder can cause both physical symptoms and serious emotional distress that is persistent and interferes with your day-to-day life.

Physical symptoms of PTSD can include:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Muscle tension
  • Headaches
  • Excessive sweating
  • Gastrointestinal problems (nausea, indigestion)
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath or dizziness
  • Chronic pain

Psychological and emotional symptoms of PTSD can include:

  • Constantly feeling on edge or easily startled
  • Nightmares and/or insomnia
  • Intrusive or negative thoughts
  • Flashbacks
  • Mood changes (increased anger, irritability, and/or sadness)
  • Trouble concentrating

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above persistently, it’s important to seek help from a mental health professional for a diagnosis and treatment plan.

No, online doctors and nurse practitioners on Sesame will not prescribe any medication listed as a controlled substance. This includes stimulant ADHD medication (Adderall, Vyvanse), benzodiazepines (Ativan, Klonopin, Valium, Xanax) and opioids.

No. Sesame does not accept insurance to keep prices low and transparent – the upfront price you see next to your provider’s name is the price you pay!

However, you can pay for your online visit using your Health Savings Account (HSA) card or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) card if you have one.

If you do have insurance and are prescribed medication during your appointment, your prescription may be covered depending on your plan.

You will also receive a prescription savings card from Sesame if medication is prescribed. The prescription savings card is often cheaper than a co-pay on your prescription, so we recommend comparing your insurance co-pay to the savings card price before filling your prescription.

Yes! Sesame is available to all patients regardless of insurance status. Simply browse Sesame providers, select a price and an appointment time slot that works for you, and get the care you need without hidden fees or surprise bills.
