Clomiphene (generic Clomid) is a medication used to stimulate ovulation in women who are struggling with infertility. It works by stimulating the production of select hormones that support the growth and release of a mature egg (a process called ovulation).

Clomiphene is usually prescribed by a primary care physician, OB/GYN, or fertility specialist. It is available in its generic form or under the brand name Clomid. It can be prescribed on Sesame after an online fertility consult, at your provider's discretion. For more information, talk to a doctor about whether clomiphene is right for you.

Clomiphene is a fertility medication used to induce ovulation (egg production) in women who are unable to become pregnant (infertility).

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive despite having frequent, unprotected intercourse for at least a year. A woman with infertility may experience irregular or nonexistent menstrual cycles.

Infertility can be caused by a combination of circumstances that impede pregnancy. Fortunately, several safe and efficient treatments can dramatically increase your chances of conceiving.

Because clomiphene stimulates certain hormone responses, it has other off-label uses in addition to treating infertility. Talk to your health care provider about what these are and whether or not clomiphene is right for you.

Currently, online prescriptions for clomiphene on Sesame are limited to the following states: AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, MD, ME, MI, MO, MT, NC, ND, NH, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, WI and WY.

Clomiphene helps you to produce an egg by tricking your body into thinking that your estrogen levels are lower than they are. This causes the pituitary gland to secrete more follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). These increased levels of FSH stimulate the ovaries to produce an egg follicle (or multiple follicles). Higher levels of LH stimulate ovulation so that the egg follicle(s) can be released so they can be fertilized.

Many people who use clomiphene experience no adverse effects at all. However, there are some side effects that you should be aware of. The most common of these are:

  • Flushing (a feeling of warmth)
  • Upset stomach or vomiting
  • Breast tenderness
  • Headache
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding

Talk to your doctor if any of these are severe or do not go away.

While a severe adverse reaction to this medication is uncommon, it can occur. Get immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following:

  • Vision problem (such as blurred vision, double vision, or visual spots or flashes)
  • Stomach pain or swelling
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Shortness of breath

Please note that this is not a complete list of all possible adverse reactions or precautions. Seek medical attention right away if you experience an upset stomach, vomiting, blurred vision, vision impairment, and stomach pain or swelling.

Beause clomiphene can cause blurred vision, do not operate a motorized vehicle or heavy machinery until you know how the medication affects you.

As with all prescription medication, be sure to inform the prescribing doctor about any medical conditions you have been previously diagnosed with and any medication/ supplements you are currently taking before taking clomiphene. Clompiphene can interact with other forms of medication, causing potentially serious side effects. In addition, let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant before starting treatment with this medication. For more information please visit the National Institutes of Health’s DailyMed webpage for clomiphene.

Clomiphene is generally taken five days in a row toward the beginning of your menstrual period. Ovulation doesn’t occur while you’re taking the medication, however, from your first dose your body begins working towards producing an egg. Ovulation generally occurs 5 to 10 days after taking the last clomiphene pill.

Because clomiphene has been shown to increase risk of ovarian cancer, it should not be taken for more than 6 menstrual cycles in a row. Talk to your provider about the proper dosage of clomiphene and the risks associated with taking it.

Clomiphene is commonly supplied as an oral tablet. The typical starting dose is one 50 mg pill a day for five days in a row. It is usually taken toward the start of a menstrual period. This dosage may be adjusted depending on the patient's reaction to it, their age, body weight, and the medical condition requiring treatment.

Use this medication only as prescribed by your doctor. Do not increase or decrease your dosage without consulting with a health care provider first. You should also be sure to tell your doctor about any medications that you are currently taking, and any health conditions you may have. Clomiphene may interact with other medications, leading to adverse reactions.

Keep clomiphene in a sealed container at room temperature and out of the reach of children.

Clomiphene is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
