What are the side effects of fluoxetine?

The use of fluoxetine can lead to various side effects in some individuals.

Common mild side effects of fluoxetine use include:

  • Insomnia
  • Nervousness/ restlessness
  • Headache
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Heartburn
  • Uncontrollable shaking
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Stuffy nose
  • Sexual dysfunction in men and women
  • Dry mouth

More severe side effects of fluoxetine use can include:

  • Severe skin reactions, such as rash or hives
  • Allergic reactions (like rash, itching, swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing)
  • Liver problems (symptoms may include yellowing of the skin or eyes, itching, right-sided upper belly pain)
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Suicidal thoughts or behaviors, especially in young adults and adolescents
  • Serotonin syndrome (symptoms include high fever, agitation, confusion, trembling, sweating, rapid heartbeat)
  • Severe neurological disturbances (like seizures and manic episodes)
  • Changes in vision

If you experience any severe or concerning side effects while taking fluoxetine, contact your healthcare provider right away.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before using fluoxetine?

Tell your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, allergies, or other medications you are taking before starting treatment with pantoprazole. This includes prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and dietary supplements, as they may interact with fluoxetine.

Tell your provider if you are taking these medications or supplements:

  • MAOI medications
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Antibiotics
  • Antipsychotic medication
  • Anticonvulsant medications
  • NSAID medications
  • Antiplatelet medications
  • Heart rhythm medications

You should also mention medical conditions such as:

  • Liver disease
  • Diabetes
  • Glaucoma
  • Seizures or epilepsy
  • Prolonged QT interval
  • Heart problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Electroconvulsive therapy
  • Osteoporosis

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider before using fluoxetine to assess potential risks and benefits.

Are there any other special instructions I should follow?

Take fluoxetine exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not exceed the recommended dose or duration of treatment.

Fluoxetine can impair your thinking or behavior. It can also cause drowsiness (especially when taken with alcohol). Do not operate heavy machinery or vehicles until you know how fluoxetine affects you.

Take fluoxetine around the same time every day (preferably in the morning). Fluoxetine can be taken with or without food.

What should I do in case of an overdose?

In case of a fluoxetine overdose, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include severe dizziness, confusion, changes in heartbeat, fever, fainting, unconsciousness, and seizures. If you suspect an overdose, contact the poison control helpline at 1-800-222-1222 or call emergency services.
