Griseofulvin is a prescription medication used to treat fungal infections, especially those affecting the skin, hair, and nails. It belongs to the class of drugs known as antifungal agents. Griseofulvin works by inhibiting the growth and reproduction of fungal cells, helping to eliminate the infection.

Griseofulvin is available in its generic form or under the brand name Fulvicin.

This medication can only be obtained with a prescription, meaning you must have a written prescription from a licensed healthcare provider to purchase it.

Griseofulvin is primarily prescribed for treating fungal infections caused by susceptible strains of fungi. Types of infections treated by griseofulvin include:

  • Ringworm (tinea corporis)
  • Athlete's foot (tinea pedis)
  • Jock itch (tinea cruris)
  • Fungal infections of the nails (tinea unguium or onychomycosis)
  • Fungal infections of the scalp and hair (tinea capitis)
  • Fungal infections of the skin (tinea corporis)

Griseofulvin is not effective against bacterial or viral infections.

Griseofulvin works by binding to the fungal cells' microtubules, which are involved in cell division and growth. By disrupting these processes, griseofulvin inhibits the multiplication and spread of the fungi, ultimately leading to their elimination by the body's immune system.

The use of griseofulvin may lead to adverse side effects.

Mild side effects associated with griseofulvin may include:

  • Headache
  • Upset stomach
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Increased thirst

More severe side effects are rare but may include:

  • Allergic reactions (such as severe skin rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing)
  • Liver problems (jaundice, dark urine, persistent nausea or vomiting, stomach/abdominal pain, or loss of appetite)
  • Changes in blood cell counts (unusual tiredness or weakness, pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding)
  • Confusion
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Persistent cough
  • New or worsening symptoms of fungal infection

If you experience any of these side effects or have concerns about them, consult your healthcare provider.

Before starting treatment with griseofulvin, inform your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, allergies, or other medications you are taking. This includes prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and dietary supplements, as they may interact with griseofulvin.

Specifically, tell your healthcare provider if you have a history of:

  • Liver disease
  • Porphyria (a group of rare genetic disorders that affect the skin and nervous system)
  • Alcohol use disorder

Griseofulvin should not be used during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider before using griseofulvin to assess potential risks and benefits.

The dosing of griseofulvin may vary depending on the type and severity of the fungal infection and the patient's age and weight. Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dosage for your situation.

Griseofulvin is usually taken orally with a fatty meal or high-fat snack to improve absorption. Let your provider know if you are on a low-fat diet.

It is important to complete the full course of treatment as your healthcare provider prescribes, even if your symptoms improve before the medication is finished.

Do not discontinue or change your griseofulvin dosage without consulting your doctor.

Take the medication exactly as prescribed, and inform your doctor if you begin to experience any side effects while taking the medication.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it's nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regularly scheduled amount. Do not take a double dose of griseofulvin.

Store griseofulvin in its original container at room temperature, away from excessive heat or moisture. Keep the medication out of the reach of children and ensure that the container is tightly closed.

Griseofulvin is currently only available with a prescription. A licensed healthcare provider must authorize the use of this drug.
