What is Intrarosa (DHEA vaginal insert)?
Intrarosa is a prescription medication used to treat vaginal dryness and painful sex caused by menopause. It comes as a small vaginal insert that you use once a day at bedtime.
Intrarosa contains a hormone called prasterone, also known as DHEA (short for dehydroepiandrosterone). When inserted, DHEA turns into small amounts of estrogen and other hormones that your body naturally makes less of during menopause. This helps restore hormone levels, helping to relieve vaginal dryness and discomfort caused by menopause.
What are the common side effects of Intrarosa (DHEA vaginal insert)?
Most people tolerate Intrarosa well, but like any medication, it can cause side effects. These are usually mild and go away on their own. Still, you should let your doctor know if anything feels off. Common side effects may include:
- Vaginal discharge (often a white or yellowish fluid—this is normal with inserts)
- Slight vaginal irritation or discomfort
- Unusual vaginal odor
Less common or more serious side effects:
- Vaginal bleeding (especially if it’s new or unexpected)
- Pelvic pain
- Signs of a vaginal infection (itching, burning, or unusual discharge)
Let your provider know right away if you experience anything that seems unusual or bothersome. Before starting Intrarosa, make sure your provider knows about any history of breast, uterine, or ovarian cancer, liver problems, or if you’re currently using other hormone-based treatments.
