Isosorbide mononitrate (generic for Imdur) is a prescription medication known as a vasodilator. It is used to manage chest pain (angina) that is caused by coronary artery disease (a narrowing of the blood vessels that carry blood to the heart).

Vasodilators work by relaxing the blood vessels allowing more blood and oxygen to flow to the heart while lessening its workload.

Isosorbide mononitrate is used to manage chest pain (angina) in patients who have coronary heart disease (a condition in which the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart narrow restricting blood flow).

Isosorbide mononitrate belongs to a class of drugs known as vasodilators. Nitrates correct the imbalance between the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart and reduce the amount of work required of the heart by relaxing the veins and arteries. This helps to manage conditions like angina, in which pain is caused by the heart not receiving sufficient oxygen.

The most common side effects of Isosorbide mononitrate are headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, and flushing. These will generally go away as your body adjusts to the medication. A headache is often a sign that the medication is working and your doctor may recommend treatment with over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or aspirin. Tell your doctor if the headaches are severe or don’t go away.

To minimize lightheadedness and dizziness, stand up slowly.

Severe adverse reactions to isosorbide mononitrate are rare, but can occur. Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious problems or allergic reactions to this medication.

This is not a complete list of side effects. For more information regarding precautions and possible side effects, please visit the National Institutes of Health’s DailyMed page for Isosorbide Mononitrate.

Isosorbide mononitrate extended-release tablets only need to be taken once a day (usually in the morning) and will provide its effect gradually for the next 8 to 10 hours. Talk to your doctor if you need instant relief.

The usual starting dose for isosorbide mononitrate is 30 mg taken once a day in the morning. The doctor will monitor your body’s response to this dosage and may increase the dose after several days. The tablets should not be chewed or crushed and should be swallowed with at least a half-glass of fluid.
