Ketorolac is a prescription pain medication and anti-inflammatory drug. Ketorolac is commonly prescribed for one of two reasons: either as a topical treatment for eye irritation caused by allergies or surgical procedures or as an oral medication for pain that may occur in the body after surgery. Ketorolac is classified as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is non-habit forming.

Ketorolac is classified as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). These drugs reduce pain and inflammation. Ketorolac, specifically, is prescribed for one of two reasons:

- Pain management: Ketorolac may be administered as an IV injection, oral tablet, or topical eye spray as a treatment for pain following an operation. Eye spray is generally prescribed for patients who are recovering from cataract surgery or other forms of eye operations.

- Topical eye drops: Ketorolac eye drops are prescribed as a topical treatment to help prevent itchiness, burning, and stinging by reducing inflammation caused by seasonal allergies.

Ketorolac is classified as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). These drugs work by blocking enzymes that cause inflammation - your body’s natural response to injury, or illness. By blocking the production of these enzymes, ketorolac reduces the pain and discomfort caused by the inflammatory response.

As a method of pain management after an operation, ketorolac is administered either as an oral tablet, IV injection, or eye drop (for eye operations) to reduce the body’s inflammatory response. This can ease discomfort and minimize swelling.

As a method of topical treatment, ketorolac blocks your body’s natural inflammatory response to irritants - which helps treat and prevent the itchiness, burning, and stinging eye symptoms caused by seasonal allergies.

Ketorolac has been shown to cause some side effects. If these mild reactions do not go away within a few days, talk to your health care provider.

Common side effects of the oral or IV administration of ketorolac include:

  • Headache
  • Constipation/ diarrhea
  • Gas
  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Sweating

This is not a complete list of adverse reactions. If you experience fever, blisters, swelling, difficulty breathing, or other more serious effects, talk to your health care provider right away.

Common side effects of topical eye drops containing ketorolac include:

  • Itchiness
  • Redness
  • Tearing
  • Light sensitivity
  • Swelling

If these symptoms do not go away shortly after applying the eye drops, talk to your health care provider right away.

As with all prescription medication, be sure to inform the prescribing doctor about any medical conditions you have been previously diagnosed with, as well as any medication/ supplements you are currently taking. In addition, let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant. Ketorolac can affect fetal health and cause problems with delivery.

The typical starting dose of ketorolac depends on your diagnosis, age, and any pre-existing medical conditions you may have.

Do not discontinue or increase your dosage of ketorolac without consulting your doctor first. Take the medication exactly as prescribed, and inform your doctor if you begin to experience any side effects while taking the medication.

Ketorolac is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
