Linaclotide is a prescription medication used to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) and chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC).

Linaclotide is prescribed to treat irritable bowel syndrome when constipation is the primary problem (IBS-C). It is also prescribed to treat chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC).

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition characterized by cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation. IBS is chronic and requires continued management to reduce discomfort and symptoms. The exact cause of IBS is not known. One possible cause is a malfunction of the immune system. Genetics also seems to be a contributing factor, as it is more common among people with a family history of the disease.

Chronic idiopathic constipation - also known as chronic constipation - is an ongoing condition characterized by irregular, infrequent, or difficult bowel movements. Chronic constipation has no known cause or underlying risk factor. While this condition cannot be cured, medication such as linaclotide can help ease symptoms caused by CIC.

Linaclotide is classified as a guanylate cyclase-C agonist, a classification of medication used for the treatment of constipation. These drugs work by stimulating the production and secretion of certain forms of intestinal fluid. An increase in intestinal fluid secretion can help ease the passage of stools through the digestive tract, which helps treat constipation.

Linaclotide has been shown to cause some side effects. Talk to your health care provider if these mild reactions do not go away within a few days.

Common symptoms reported from linaclotide use include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Gas
  • Upset stomach/ bloating
  • Headache

This is not a complete list of adverse reactions caused by linaclotide. Call your doctor right away if you experience any difficulty breathing, severe stomach pain, hives, or swelling while taking this medication.

As with all prescription medication, be sure to inform the prescribing doctor about any medical conditions you have been previously diagnosed with and any medication/ supplements you are currently taking before taking linaclotide. Linaclotide can interact with other forms of medication, causing potentially serious side effects. In addition, let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant before starting treatment with this medication.

Linaclotide is commonly supplied as an oral tablet. For adults managing chronic constipation, 145 micrograms (mcg) of linaclotide is prescribed to be taken once a day. As a treatment for irritable bowel syndrome with constipation, adults are prescribed 290 mcg of linaclotide to be taken once a day. These dosages may be adjusted as needed.

Linaclotide should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before your first meal of the day. Do not crush, chew, or break the oral tablet.

Do not discontinue or increase your dosage of linaclotide without consulting your doctor first. Take the medication exactly as prescribed, and inform your doctor if you begin to experience any side effects while taking the medication.

Linaclotide is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
