Metoclopramide (generic Reglan) is a prescription drug used to relieve heartburn and speed up the healing of sores in the esophagus (the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach) for people with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Metoclopramide can also be used by people with diabetes to treat the symptoms of slow stomach emptying (gastroparesis), such as nausea, vomiting, heartburn, and loss of appetite.

Tired of experiencing heartburn every time you try to enjoy a meal? Talk to your doctor about whether metoclopramide may be right for you.

While adverse reactions to metoclopramide are uncommon, some patients who take the drug may experience mild side effects, including drowsiness, excessive tiredness, weakness, headache, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, breast enlargement or discharge, missed menstrual periods, decreased sexual ability, frequent urination, and inability to control urination.

Rare, more serious adverse events have also been known to occur, including the serious -- and sometimes irreversible -- movement disorder, tardive dyskinesia. If you are concerned that metoclopramide may be causing you to experience any number of adverse side effects, please contact your doctor or clinician.

Metoclopramide belongs to a class of medications known as prokinetic agents. These medications help to strengthen the contractions of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and help to stimulate other muscle contractions throughout your gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This helps the contents of the stomach to empty faster allowing less time for acid reflux to occur.
