Nystatin is an antifungal medication used to treat fungal infections of the mouth, skin, stomach lining, and intestines. It is also used as a treatment for fungal vaginal infections.
Nystatin is used to treat fungal infections in various parts of the body. Oral nystatin is used for infections inside the mouth, the stomach lining, and the intestines. Topical nystatin is applied externally to treat fungal infections of the skin.
Nystatin is classified in a category of antifungal medications known as polyenes. Polyenes bind to specific cells in a fungus, causing cell death and preventing reproduction. This action helps treat existing infections while preventing the infection from continuing to grow.
The time it takes to notice the effects of nystatin will vary depending on the patient and the severity of the condition being treated. Most patients start feeling better within two days after starting use. In the case of a severe infection, it may take longer before you feel better.
If you have been taking nystatin for several days and aren't feeling better, talk to your healthcare provider. Do not increase your dosage. If you are feeling better, do not stop using nystatin until your provider directs you to do so.
Take nystatin for as long as your provider tells you to.
