Ranolazine is a prescription medication used to treat chronic angina (chest pain). Unlike other forms of angina medication, it does not work fast enough to treat an angina attack that is already occurring. This medication is commonly administered as an oral tablet.

Ranolazine may be prescribed in conjunction with other forms of medication to reduce angina symptoms and increase oxygen flow to the heart.

Ranolazine is used to treat chronic (ongoing) angina (chest pain) symptoms caused by a lack of oxygen to the heart. While it cannot treat an angina attack that’s already occurring, it can help patients prevent painful symptoms

Angina is chest pain that is caused by a lack of oxygen-rich blood flow to the heart. Angina is not a condition, instead, it is a symptom of coronary artery disease or clogged blood vessels that go to and from the heart. Angina is common, but hard to differentiate from other types of chest pain (such as indigestion).

Common symptoms of angina include:

  • Pressure, tightness, or pain in the chest
  • Pain in arms, neck, shoulders, or back
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Excessive sweating
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
Ranolazine is classified as an antianginal medication, a broad spectrum of drugs used to treat angina symptoms. Ranolazine’s exact mechanism of action on the body is not known. But, as a treatment for angina, it helps improve oxygen flow to and from the heart which reduces symptoms of chest pain, pressure, and shortness of breath.

Ranolazine has been shown to cause some side effects. If these adverse reactions do not go away within a few days, talk to your health care provider.

Common side effects reported while taking ranolazine include:

  • Constipation
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Nausea

This is not a complete list of adverse effects – though these are among the most common. Seek medical attention right away if you experience symptoms such as a change in your heartbeat, chest pain, fainting, rash, hives, or difficulty breathing.

As with all prescription medication, be sure to inform the prescribing doctor about any medical conditions you have been previously diagnosed with, as well as any medication/ supplements you are currently taking before starting treatment with ranolazine. Ranolazine can interact with other forms of medication and substances, causing potentially serious side effects. In addition, let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant before starting treatment with this medication.

Ranolazine is commonly administered as an extended-release tablet or extended-release granules that should be sprinkled on soft food (such as applesauce or yogurt).

For adults, the preliminary dose of ranolazine starts at 500 mg to be taken 2 times a day. This dosage may be adjusted as needed.

Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while using this medication. If you miss a dose, wait until your next dose to take the medication. Do not double your dosage.

Do not discontinue or increase your dosage of ranolazine without consulting your doctor first. Take the medication exactly as prescribed, and inform your doctor if you begin to experience any side effects while taking the medication.

Ranolazine is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
