Spironolactone is a medication classified as an aldosterone antagonist. It is also classified as a potassium-sparing diuretic. It is used to treat conditions such as high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, edema (fluid retention), and certain hormonal imbalances.

Spironolactone is used to treat conditions such as:

Spironolactone works by blocking the effects of aldosterone, a hormone that regulates salt and water balance in the body. By blocking aldosterone, spironolactone helps the kidneys remove excess fluid and sodium from the body while holding on to potassium.

Spironolactone is usually taken orally with or without food, as directed by your healthcare provider. It should be taken around the same time every day and should either always be taken with food or always without. The dosage and frequency of spironolactone depend on your condition and response to treatment.

Follow the prescribed dosage and schedule strictly. Do not stop taking spironolactone suddenly without consulting your healthcare provider, as it may cause a sudden increase in blood pressure or fluid retention.

The time it takes to feel the full effects of spironolactone can vary depending on the condition being treated.
