Trimethoprim is a prescription medication used to treat bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections (UTIs). It is available under brand names like Primsol and Trimpex. Trimethoprim belongs to the antibiotic drug class and inhibits the growth and spread of bacteria in the body.

Please note that a licensed healthcare provider's prescription is required for this medication.

Trimethoprim is primarily prescribed to treat bacterial infections. Its primary use is as a treatment for urinary tract infections.

The term “urinary tract infection” describes several bacterial infections of the various organs in the urinary tract. While most UTIs are caused by bacteria entering the body through the urethra, the germs can spread and infect the ureters (ureteritis), kidneys (pyelonephritis), and bladder (cystitis).

Common UTI symptoms include:

  • A strong and persistent urge to urinate
  • A burning sensation while urinating (dysuria)
  • Frequent urination with little volume
  • Cloudy or hazy urine
  • Bloody urine
  • Strong smelling urine
  • Pressure or cramping in the groin, lower abdomen, or lower belly
  • Lower back pain (common with kidney infection)
Trimethoprim is classified as an antibiotic. It works by inhibiting the growth and multiplication of bacteria in the body. Trimethoprim specifically targets bacterial dihydrofolate reductase, an enzyme essential for producing DNA, RNA, and proteins in bacteria. By blocking this enzyme, trimethoprim disrupts bacterial cell division and growth, ultimately leading to the death of the bacteria.

While using trimethoprim, some individuals may experience side effects, although not everyone will.

Mild side effects may include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Upset stomach
  • Itching
  • Skin photosensitivity (sensitivity to sunlight)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • Changes in taste

More severe side effects include:

  • Rash
  • Hives
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chest tightness or pain
  • Sore throat
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Yellowing skin or eyes

It's essential to consult your healthcare provider if you experience any of these side effects or have concerns about taking this medication.

Before starting treatment with trimethoprim, inform your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, allergies, or other medications you are taking. This includes prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and dietary supplements, as they may interact with trimethoprim.

Specifically, discuss any history of:

  • Kidney problems
  • Liver problems
  • Blood disorders
  • Anemia
  • Allergies to trimethoprim or similar antibiotics

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider before using trimethoprim to assess potential risks and benefits.

The recommended dosage of trimethoprim may vary depending on the type and severity of the infection and the patient’s age and body weight. Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dosage and administration instructions.

Trimethoprim is typically taken orally in tablet or liquid form, with or without food. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding dosing and other recommendations for taking trimethoprim.

Do not discontinue or alter your dosage without consulting your doctor.

Take the medication exactly as prescribed, and inform your doctor if you begin to experience any side effects while taking the medication.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regularly scheduled amount. Do not take a double dose of trimethoprim.

Store trimethoprim as directed by your healthcare provider or pharmacist. Proper storage is essential to maintain the medication's effectiveness. Typically, trimethoprim should be stored at room temperature, away from excessive heat, light, and moisture.

Keep the medication out of the reach of children and ensure that the container is tightly closed.

Trimethoprim is available by prescription only. A licensed healthcare provider must authorize the use of this medication.
