Yes. If Wegovy is deemed clinically appropriate, you can receive a prescription through reputable online weight loss programs like Success by Sesame. You’ll meet with a licensed medical provider who evaluates you and, if appropriate, writes a prescription for GLP-1 medications like Wegovy for weight loss.

Once you have the prescription, you’ll be able to purchase Wegovy by filling your Rx at your preferred pharmacy—either through an online pharmacy or an in-person/local pharmacy.

Yes, Wegovy also comes in the form of an oral pill that is taken once daily for weight loss. The Wegovy pill works like Wegovy injections to help control appetite and cravings and is highly effective. In clinical trials, it helped patients with obesity or overweight to lose 14% of their body weight on average (compared to the 15% average weight loss seen with Wegovy injections.)

Wegovy and Ozempic both contain semaglutide. Wegovy is FDA-approved for weight loss and is available in both injection and pill form, while Ozempic is injection-only and approved for type 2 diabetes (not weight loss).

Like Wegovy, Zepbound is also approved for weight loss. However, it contains a different medication (tirzepatide), and there is no oral version of Zepbound. Unlike Ozempic, both Wegovy and Zepbound are available at lower-cost, cash-pay prices for patients without insurance.

The active ingredient in Wegovy is called semaglutide, and it’s prescribed as a weight loss treatment for adults with obesity. It is also prescribed for those with overweight and at least one weight-related health problem, like high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure.

While semaglutide for weight loss is marketed under the brand-name Wegovy, semaglutide is also prescribed for diabetes under the brand name Ozempic. In other words, both medications contain the same ingredients, but are branded and FDA-approved for different conditions.

Wegovy belongs to a class of drugs called incretic mimetics, which work by mimicking a natural hormone in your body that helps control blood sugar and appetite. When you take Wegovy, it signals your pancreas to release insulin when your blood sugar is high. Insulin helps your body use sugar from your bloodstream for energy, which keeps blood sugar levels stable.

Wegovy also helps you feel fuller for longer and reduces hunger, which can make it easier to eat less and lose weight over time.

The price you pay for Wegovy will depend on your insurance status and whether you're taking Wegovy pills or Wegovy injections.

If you have health insurance, both Wegovy injections and pills can cost as little as $25/mo., depending on your plan.

If you're uninsured or have a health insurance plan that doesn't offer coverage for Wegovy, Wegovy's manufacturer offers a program for self-pay patients with reduced prices. Through this self-pay program, Wegovy injections are currently priced at $349 per month. Wegovy pills are priced at $149 for a month's supply of 1.5mg or 4mg tablets, or $299 for a month's supply of 9mg or 25mg tablets.

Both pricing options are available through Sesame's weight loss program, Success by Sesame, if you're clinically eligible. For those with insurance, Sesame providers can also help with any required insurance paperwork to help reduce the cost of Wegovy.

If you are taking the weekly Wegovy injection, the typical starting dose for new patients is .25mg. After 30 days or so, your prescriber will gradually increase the dose (e.g., 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg) every 4 weeks until reaching a maintenance dose (often 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg once weekly) based on how your body is responding to the medication.

If you are taking the once-daily Wegovy pill, the typical starting dose is one 1.5 mg tablet every day. Your healthcare provider will then increase the dose approximately every 30 days or so (e.g., to 4 mg, then 9 mg) up toward a 25 mg once-daily maintenance dose, depending on your tolerance.

Wegovy is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.

If you are exploring Wegovy as a weight loss treatment, providers can write a prescription for weight loss pills or injections through Sesame’s online weight loss program, Success by Sesame, if deemed clinically appropriate.

No, there are currently no generic alternatives to Wegovy (semaglutide). Although there are other semaglutide medications (Ozempic, Rybelsus) on the market, all GLP-1 agonist drugs are available only as brand-name products.

If you need assistance with navigating your options, you can schedule a video consult with a provider through Sesame’s weight loss program to discuss the best medication for your needs.

The Success by Sesame program starts at just $99 per month and includes telehealth visits, unlimited messaging, and ongoing clinical care from a provider of your choice. The $99 monthly fee does not include the cost of medication.

It's important to note that brand-name GLP-1 receptor agonist medications can be expensive without insurance coverage. However, many manufacturers offer reduced cash-pay prices for self-pay patients, as well as weight loss medication savings coupons.

If you are insured, your provider can assist with insurance pre-authorization paperwork to help reduce the cost of your medication.

Note that providers on Sesame set their own prices, which means that some providers may offer the service at a higher price.

This promotional offer is valid for new self-pay patients in the United States whose prescribing healthcare provider authorizes Wegovy® or Ozempic®. Patients will pay $199 per month for the first two consecutive months of therapy at the lowest available dosage strengths (0.25 mg or 0.5 mg) of Wegovy® or Ozempic®.

After the two-month introductory period, the standard self-pay price of $349 will apply. This offer is effective beginning November 17, 2025 and is valid through March 31, 2026 for qualifying new patients.

Patients are not eligible if he/she is enrolled in any federal or state health care program with prescription drug coverage. Please see Novo Nordisk's terms for more detail. The cost of Wegovy® and Ozempic® under this promotion is separate from the $99/month Success by Sesame subscription price. The discount applies only to the medication cost, not to program or service fees.

Certain GLP-1 therapies such as semaglutide (the active ingredient in Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy), liraglutide (the active ingredient in Saxenda and Victoza), and tirzepatide (the active ingredient in Mounjaro and Zepbound) may increase the likelihood of developing thyroid gland tumors, including MTC, a type of thyroid cancer. This conclusion is based on studies where laboratory animals given semaglutide, liraglutide, tirzepatide and other GLP-1 medications developed tumors. However, it is not yet confirmed if these medications pose the same risk to humans. You can find additional information about the risks of FDA-approved medications that contain semaglutide here.

It’s important to inform your doctor if you or any family member has ever had MTC or MEN. If this is the case, your doctor will likely advise against taking GLP-1 medications.

If you are prescribed a GLP-1 medication and exhibit any of the following symptoms, you should contact your provider immediately:

  • A lump or swelling in the neck
  • Hoarseness
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Severe abdominal pain

Before taking GLP-1 medications, you should also discuss the following with your provider:

Allergies: Inform your doctor and pharmacist of any allergies you have to semaglutide (including under brand names Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy) or similar medications such as tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound), dulaglutide (Trulicity), exenatide (Bydureon BCise, Byetta), liraglutide (Saxenda, Victoza, or in Xultophy) and lixisenatide (Adlyxin, or in Soliqua).

Personal and family medical history: Be sure to disclose if you have a history of medical conditions like pancreatitis, diabetic retinopathy, gallbladder disease or kidney disease. Inform your doctor about recent episodes of diarrhea, nausea, vomiting or any inability to consume liquids, which could lead to dehydration.

Current medications and supplements: Provide a comprehensive list of all medicines and supplements you are currently taking, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products. This is crucial as GLP-1 medications can alter how your body absorbs oral medications.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant soon.

Surgical procedures: In the event of surgery, including dental procedures, inform the medical or dental professional that you are on GLP-1 medication.

It's essential to thoroughly discuss these risks with your healthcare provider and consider your personal and family medical history when deciding whether to use these medications. Your doctor can provide guidance on the best course of action based on your specific health situation.
