Medically reviewed by:Dr. Allison Edwards, MD

Online prescription refills are up to the discretion of your provider. If you’re a new patient, most providers will write a prescription for 30 days and may want to schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure that the medication is effective. If you’re a returning patient, your provider may prescribe for a longer period of time.

Sesame providers can prescribe a wide variety of common medications, including antibiotics, antidepressants, allergy medications, blood pressure medications, and more. However, they are not able to prescribe controlled substances, such as stimulants, opioids, or benzodiazepines

Please keep in mind that all prescriptions are issued at the discretion of your provider. If your provider decides a prescription is not necessary, the appointment is not refundable.

Sesame offers online prescription and refill services at affordable prices, starting at just $37. Most insurance plans do not require prior authorization for medication coverage. When you go to the pharmacy to pick up your prescription, the pharmacist can use the insurance information they have on file, or you can give them your insurance information for coverage.

Health insurance plans publish a formulary for the drugs covered by the plan and the corresponding drug and copay prices. Check with your insurance provider to find out what drugs require authorization and the specific coverage information regarding the medication you’ve been prescribed.

For patients who book a weight management service through Sesame’s online weight loss management program, providers can assist with prior insurance authorization requests for your medication. For more information, visit our video weight loss program page.

It is helpful to have proof of a prior prescription before your refill visit. Depending on the medication, some Sesame providers may require proof of a prior prescription before refilling it. Your provider may ask to see a picture of an old pill bottle or check for previous prescriptions from another Sesame provider. In some instances, your Sesame provider may also be able to access a national pharmacy system to see prescriptions from non-Sesame providers.

No. Clinicians on Sesame can prescribe a wide range of medications as treatment for infections, allergies, and other ailments (such as blood pressure medication).

However, online doctors and online health care providers on Sesame will not prescribe any medication listed as a controlled substance, including opioids and narcotics.

A consultation with a doctor or nurse practitioner is legally required to receive a prescription. However, online telehealth visits allow you to get a prescription or refill without an in-person trip to the doctor's office.

While most medications can be prescribed via telehealth, prescriptions for controlled substances typically require an in-person evaluation.

Online providers on Sesame do not prescribe controlled substances.

It depends! Providers on Sesame can typically assist with refilling 1-2 existing prescriptions during a prescription refill appointment.
