About Sesame

Medically reviewed by:Dr. Allison Edwards, MD

Sesame is the first-ever healthcare marketplace that allows patients to book directly with licensed doctors and providers at affordable, upfront cash prices — no long wait times, no hidden fees, and no insurance needed. We call it "half-price healthcare."

How? We've stripped away all of the things that mark up the price of your care, like third-party billing fees and insurance middlemen. Instead, patients can book online and in-person care across 36+ specialties, including dermatology, mental health & weight loss, within 1-2 hours at the touch of a button.

No! Sesame is available to everyone regardless of insurance status, and we do not bill health insurance in order to keep prices affordable for all. This means you don’t need to worry about surprise bills, specialist referrals or insurance coverage to access high-quality mental health care.

All Sesame providers must hold an active NPI number and license that is in good standing with the authority to practice independently in any states where they are listed and treating patients.

Sesame uses Stripe, the most trusted, secure third-party payment platform in the world. Stripe keeps your payment information for all future purchases on their secure servers; no one else receives access to your payment information.

Sesame’s online therapy services provide a safe and confidential space for individuals to engage in talk therapy. A licensed therapist of your choice will lead these video sessions, addressing topics such as trauma, depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, and other mental health needs.

Each session focuses on emotional support, coping strategies, and personal growth. Your therapist may suggest evidence-based methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and other types of therapy. They may also recommend follow-up care or additional services if needed.

This service does not involve medication prescriptions, making it a helpful option for those seeking holistic, non-pharmaceutical therapeutic interventions.

During your video visit, you’ll have an in-depth discussion with a trained Sesame psychiatrist or psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner about how you’ve been feeling and your mental health symptoms. This service includes comprehensive medication management or prescriptions when appropriate.

  • For new patients, your first session includes a psychiatric evaluation and a personalized treatment plan. This may include medication, if appropriate. Your provider will consider psychological, biological, and social factors to understand your needs.
  • For existing patients, your consult will focus on your ongoing care. Your provider will review how you’re doing and adjust your treatment as needed.

Medications that are commonly prescribed during online psychiatric consults include:

  • anti-anxiety medications (buspirone, hydroxyzine, propranolol, clonidine, etc.)
  • antipsychotics (risperidone, olanzapine, aripiprazole, etc.)
  • antidepressants (sertraline, fluoxetine, escitalopram, bupropion, duloxetine, etc.)
  • mood stabilizers (lithium, lamotrigine, valproate, etc.)

Please note that mental health care providers on Sesame do not prescribe controlled substances, including stimulants. The decision to prescribe medication is at your provider’s clinical discretion.

In your online couples therapy session, you and your partner will meet with a licensed therapist on Sesame over video to talk through challenges and strengthen your relationship. Your therapist will focus on understanding both of you, helping you improve communication, resolve conflicts, and build a healthier connection.

During your online prescription refill visit, you’ll have a video appointment with a Sesame provider of your choice who will review your current medications and refill them if needed. You can expect a thorough review of your current prescriptions, a discussion about any possible side effects you're experiencing, and a prescription refill (if clinically appropriate).

Please note that all prescriptions are at the discretion of your provider. If prescribed, the cost of medication is separate. Providers on Sesame do not prescribe controlled substances.

Therapists (LMFT, LCSW, LMHC, PsyD) are professionals who can help individuals address challenges through various forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), humanistic therapy, or psychoanalysis. Therapists are generally able to diagnose and help treat mental health conditions but cannot prescribe medication.

Both psychiatrists (MDs) and psychiatric nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) can diagnose, treat and prescribe medication for mental health conditions, but there are several differences in their training and how they can treat patients:

  • Psychiatrists are medical doctors who must complete a bachelor's degree, medical doctorate degree, and residency training requirements. Their license allows them to prescribe medication in any state where they are licensed.
  • Psychiatric nurse practitioners are advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) who also have specialized training in mental health. These professionals must complete a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in psychiatric nursing before they’re able to treat patients. PMHNPs can diagnose and treat mental health conditions. However, some states require them to work under a doctor's supervision in order to prescribe certain treatments.
  • Both psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners tend to focus on medication management (like medication dosage adjustments) rather than talk therapy.
No, online health care providers on Sesame will not prescribe any medication listed as a controlled substance. This includes stimulant ADHD medication (Adderall, Vyvanse), benzodiazepines (Ativan, Klonopin, Valium, Xanax), and opioids.
