What should I tell my healthcare provider before using amoxicillin?

Inform your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, allergies, or other medications you are taking before starting treatment with amoxicillin. This includes prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and dietary supplements, as they may interact with amoxicillin.

Tell your provider if you are taking these medications or supplements:

  • Probenecid
  • Allopurinol
  • Anticoagulants (like warfarin)
  • Birth control pills (amoxicillin may reduce their effectiveness)
  • Cephalorin antibiotics
  • Methotrexate (used to treat certain cancers and autoimmune diseases)

Mention medical conditions such as:

  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Mononucleosis
  • Allergies (especially to penicillin or other antibiotics)
  • Asthma
  • Phenylketonuria (PKU)

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider before using amoxicillin to assess potential risks and benefits.

Are there any other special instructions I should follow?

Amoxicillin can be taken with or without food. Take the medication around the same time every day.

Swallow amoxicillin tablets or capsules whole with a full glass of water.

Limit alcohol consumption while taking amoxicillin, as it may increase the risk of side effects.

Take the full course of treatment, even if you are feeling better. Do not discontinue the use of amoxicillin or increase your dosage without consulting your healthcare provider.

What should I do in case of an overdose?

In case of an amoxicillin overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms may include severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramping. If you experience any of these symptoms, call the poison control helpline at 1-800-222-1222. If an individual has collapsed, is having seizures, or is unresponsive, call 9-1-1 immediately.
