  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache

More severe side effects of azithromycin use can include:

What should I tell my healthcare provider before using azithromycin?

Tell your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, allergies, or other medications you are taking before starting treatment with azithromycin. This includes prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and dietary supplements, as they may interact with azithromycin.

Tell your provider if you are taking these medications or supplements:

  • Antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium
  • Warfarin
  • Ergotamine or dihydroergotamine
  • Antibiotics
  • Medications for depression or mood disorders
  • Heart rhythm medications
  • Nausea medications
  • Statins (drugs that are used to treat high cholesterol levels)

You should also mention medical conditions such as:

  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Heart rhythm disorders
  • Heart problems
  • Blood infections
  • Low levels of magnesium or potassium
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Prolonged QT syndrome

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider before using azithromycin to assess potential risks and benefits.

Are there any other special instructions I should follow?

Take azithromycin exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not exceed the recommended dose or duration of treatment.

Azithromycin can be taken with or without food, though taking it with food may reduce stomach upset. It's important to complete the full course of treatment, even if you start feeling better, to prevent the return of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

What should I do in case of an overdose?

In case of an azithromycin overdose, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or hearing loss. If you suspect an overdose, contact the poison control helpline at 1-800-222-1222 or call emergency services.
