How should bupropion be used?

Bupropion is available in various forms, including:

  • Oral tablets
  • Extended-release oral tablets
  • Oral sustained-release tablets

Take bupropion as directed by your healthcare provider. Different formulations of bupropion release the medication differently in your body, so they are not interchangeable. Swallow the tablets whole; do not crush, chew, or break them.

Regular (immediate release) bupropion dosage usually starts at 100mg per day, to be taken twice a day. Your provider may increase the dosage up to 450mg per day, split into 4 doses.

Sustained release bupropion dosage often starts at 150mg, taken once a day (usually in the morning). Your provider may increase the dosage up to 400mg per day.

Extended-release bupropion dosage often starts at 150mg once daily, but it may increase up to 450mg per day. It is taken every 24 hours.

However, your healthcare provider may adjust the dosage based on your condition and response to treatment. Follow your provider's instructions precisely when using bupropion.

What should I do if I miss a dose of bupropion?

If you miss a dose of bupropion, take it as soon as you remember. If it's close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Avoid taking a double dose of bupropion to make up for a missed one.

What should I do if I'm feeling better while taking bupropion?

Continue taking bupropion as prescribed by your healthcare provider, even if you start feeling better. Abruptly stopping bupropion can lead to withdrawal symptoms and potential relapse of symptoms. Follow your provider's instructions regarding the duration of treatment.

How should I store bupropion?

Store bupropion according to the instructions provided by your healthcare provider or pharmacist. It should be kept at room temperature, away from excessive heat, light, and moisture. Ensure the container is tightly closed and keep the medication out of the reach of children.
