What are the side effects of carvedilol?

The use of carvedilol can lead to various side effects in some individuals.

Common mild side effects of carvedilol use include:

  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Lightheadedness
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Vision changes
  • Joint pain
  • Insomnia
  • Cough

More severe side effects of carvedilol use can include:

  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Fainting
  • Weight gain
  • Chest pain
  • Changes in heartbeat
  • Swelling
  • Skin rash
  • Hives
  • Extreme thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Blurred vision
  • Weakness

What should I tell my healthcare provider before using carvedilol?

Inform your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, allergies, or other medications you are taking before starting treatment with carvedilol. This includes prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and dietary supplements, as they may interact with carvedilol.

Tell your provider if you are taking these medications or supplements:

  • Heart rhythm medications (especially digoxin)
  • Blood thinners
  • MAOIs
  • Calcium channel blockers

  • Pheochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumor)

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss the potential risks and benefits of using hydrochlorothiazide with your healthcare provider.

Are there any other special instructions I should follow?

Take carvedilol exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not exceed the recommended dose or duration of treatment.

Your provider may direct you to avoid alcohol while taking carvedilol, as it can enhance the blood pressure-lowering effects of the medication.
