Cytomel is a prescription medication used to treat hypothyroidism - a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. It may also be prescribed as a treatment for an enlarged thyroid gland and may be supplied at a doctor’s office to test for hyperthyroidism - a condition in which the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone.

Cytomel is primarily prescribed for the treatment of hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism, also known as an underactive thyroid, is a disorder in which your thyroid gland doesn’t make enough hormones to meet your body’s needs. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in the front of your neck which produces hormones that control how your body uses energy. These important hormones control many of your body’s most important functions including your metabolism, breathing, heart rate, digestion, and mood. When your thyroid slows down, these functions can be negatively affected.

Some symptoms of a slow thyroid include:

  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Muscle weakness, stiffness, and/or aches
  • Joint pain, stiffness, or swelling
  • Sudden weight gain (and difficulty losing it)
  • High cholesterol
  • Slow heart rate
  • Dry, thinning hair
  • Dry skin
  • Swelling of the thyroid gland (called a goiter)
  • A puffy face

In addition to its use as a treatment for hypothyroidism, Cytomel is also prescribed for the treatment of an enlarged thyroid gland (commonly known as a goiter). A goiter may or may not cause symptoms. In some cases, this enlarged gland can cause coughing, throat tightness, or difficulty breathing.

Cytomel belongs to a class of medications known as thyroid agents. These medications work by supplying synthetic versions of the thyroid hormones (T3, T4, and TSH) to supplement inadequate levels produced by the thyroid gland. By supplying these hormones to the body, Cytomel helps treat and prevent the symptoms of an underactive thyroid listed above.

Cytomel has been shown to cause some side effects. Talk to your health care provider if these adverse reactions do not go away within a few days.

Common symptoms reported while taking Cytomel include:

  • Weight loss
  • Change in appetite
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Mood changes

This is not a complete list of adverse effects – though these are among the most common. Seek medical attention right away if you experience symptoms such as swelling, rash, difficulty breathing, change in your heartbeat, or anxiety/ nervousness.

As with all prescription medication, be sure to inform your health care provider about any medical conditions you have been previously diagnosed with, and any medication/ supplements you are currently taking before starting treatment with Cytomel. Cytomel can interact with other forms of medication and substances, causing potentially serious side effects. In addition, let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant before starting treatment with this medication.

Cytomel is commonly supplied as an oral tablet. The dosage of this medication will vary depending on the age of the patient, their bodyweight, and the condition requiring treatment.

Treatment with Cytomel may continue for the rest of your (or your child’s) life. Talk to your doctor about proper use and storage methods.

Do not discontinue or increase your dosage of Cytomel without consulting your doctor first. Take the medication exactly as prescribed, and inform your doctor if you begin to experience any side effects while taking the medication.

Cytomel is currently only available via prescription. This means that the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
