What are the side effects of meclizine?

The use of meclizine can lead to various side effects in some individuals.

Common mild side effects of meclizine use include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue
  • Dry mouth
  • Headache
  • Vomiting

More severe side effects include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Signs of an allergic reaction (hives, skin rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing)

What should I tell my healthcare provider before using meclizine?

Tell your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, allergies, or other medications you are taking before starting treatment with meclizine. This includes prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and dietary supplements, as they may interact with meclizine.

Tell your provider if you are taking these medications or supplements:

  • Amobarbital
  • Antihistamines
  • NSAIDs or other pain/ fever medications
  • Phenobarbital
  • Sedatives
  • Opioid pain medications
  • Anticholinergic medications (oxybutynin, dicyclomine)
  • Seizure medication
  • Tranquilizers
  • Vitamins

You should also mention medical conditions such as:

  • Glaucoma
  • Asthma
  • Urinary tract blockage
  • Gastrointestinal obstruction
  • An enlarged prostate
  • Breathing problems (like asthma, emphysema, or chronic bronchitis)
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss the potential risks and benefits of using meclizine with your healthcare provider.

Are there any other special instructions I should follow?
