Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic ointment prescribed for the treatment of bacterial skin infections. Specifically, mupirocin is indicated for use as an effective treatment for impetigo - an infection caused by the Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria.

Mupirocin is indicated for use as a topical antibiotic treatment for impetigo and other skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria.

Impetigo is highly contagious and is easily spread through touch or contact with the clothing and towels of an individual who has been infected. Because it is so contagious, impetigo is the most common skin infection in children between the ages of 2 and 5. Even though children are most commonly affected by impetigo, adults and older children are able to be infected as well. Impetigo outbreaks occur more frequently in warm, humid climates, and in crowded settings such as schools. Once this bacteria has entered the body, it results in an itchy, red, and sometimes painful rash. The rash outbreak commonly occurs around the nose and mouth but may spread to the arms, legs, trunk, and buttocks. The sores that make up this rash will eventually burst and crust over. After several days, these sores will begin to crust over.

Mupirocin is classified as a topical antibiotic medication, commonly prescribed as an ointment or gel. Topical medication is defined as a drug that is applied to the surface of the skin.

After it is applied to the skin, mupirocin kills existing bacteria and prevents their growth. These dual actions help treat existing infections while stifling the infection so that it doesn’t get worse.

You may experience mild side effects while taking mupirocin. Talk to your doctor if these adverse reactions do not go away within a few days.

Common side effects include:

  • Stinging, burning, or itching at the application site
  • Rash at the application site

Mupirocin is administered as a topical medication to be applied to the skin. The 2% mupirocin ointment, gel, or cream should be applied to the affected area of the skin 3 times daily. If you do not experience a noted improvement in symptoms within 3-5 days, talk to your health care provider. Additional treatment may be required for persistent or severe infections.

Mupirocin is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
