Medically reviewed by:Dr. Allison Edwards, MD
Prednisolone is the medicinal version of naturally occurring corticosteroids produced by the adrenal glands (two small glands located above your kidneys). These glands produce hormones that regulate inflammation, metabolism, stress responses, and blood pressure/ blood sugar levels. Prednisolone helps supply synthetic supplementation of these steroids in instances where your body not naturally producing them sufficiently.

Prednisolone is prescribed for the treatment of low corticosteroid levels, as well as inflammatory conditions that affect various areas of the body.

Ophthalmic prednisolone (eye drops) is prescribed to treat eye allergies, and inflammation in the eye.

Oral prednisolone is prescribed to treat a wide range of conditions including:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Inflammation
  • Adrenal deficiency (low levels of corticosteroids in the body)
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Asthma
  • Arthritis
  • Lupus
  • Ulcerative colitis (chronic inflammation of the bowels)
Prednisolone is classified as a corticosteroid. It is the synthesized version of naturally occurring hormones produced by the adrenal glands, which help regulate a number of functions in the body. Corticosteroid medications work by stopping your immune system from overreacting to triggers; basically, blocking certain proteins that cause swelling and inflammation. No matter how or where it is used, prednisolone works by inhibiting these responses - which can help ease uncomfortable systems and reduce the potentially harmful effects of inflammation.

Prednisolone has been shown to cause some side effects. If these mild reactions do not go away within a few days, talk to your health care provider.

Common side effects reported while taking prednisolone include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Sleeping difficulties
  • Acne
  • Increased appetite
  • Changes in menstrual periods

This is not a complete list of adverse reactions caused by prednisolone. Call your doctor right away if you experience any form of shortness of breath, skin rash, vision problems, changes in heart rate or blood pressure, severe headaches, or confusion.

As with all prescription medication, be sure to inform the prescribing doctor about any medical conditions you have been previously diagnosed with, as well as any medication/ supplements you are currently taking. Prednisolone can interact with other forms of medication, causing potentially serious side effects. In addition, let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant before starting treatment with this medication.

The starting dose of prednisolone will depend on the condition being treated, the route of administration (topical/ ophthalmic/ oral), and the age of the patient.

Oral route: When supplied as an oral tablet or capsule, adults are generally prescribed a 5-60 mg dose per day. Take prednisolone with food to avoid an upset stomach. Your health care provider may elect to increase your dosage depending on how well you are tolerating the medication.

Ophthalmic route: Prednisolone eye drops should be applied to the affected eye 4 times a day. Your health care provider may increase this dosage, depending on need.

Do not discontinue or increase your dosage of prednisolone without consulting your doctor first. Take the medication exactly as prescribed, and inform your doctor if you begin to experience any side effects while taking the medication.

Prednisolone is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
