Frequently asked questions about Risperidone

Risperidone is an antipsychotic medication that is used to treat a variety of mental and mood disorders. It helps to restore the balance of select natural substances in the brain so that you can think clearly and take part in everyday life.

While risperidone may help to control your symptoms, it is important to note that it will not cure these conditions.

Risperidone is most commonly prescribed to treat schizophrenia in patients 13 and older. It is also used to treat mania or mixed episodes (bouts of main and depression) in people over the age of 10 with bipolar disorder. In some cases, it is prescribed to treat irritability in children and adolescents between the ages of 5 and 16 who have autism.

Risperidone is believed to help treat mental health disorders because of its action as a dopamine and serotonin agonist. Dopamine and serotonin are naturally occurring chemicals in your brain (known as neurotransmitters) that are known to regulate your mood. It’s thought that people who suffer from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism have an imbalance of certain neurotransmitters. Risperidone may help to improve this imbalance by inhibiting the uptake of dopamine and serotonin.

While adverse reactions to risperidone are uncommon, some patients who take the drug may experience mild side effects, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn, dry mouth, increased saliva production, increased appetite, weight gain, dizziness, difficulty urinating, breast enlargement, insomnia, agitation, anxiety, or stomach pain.

Rare, more serious adverse events have also been known to occur. If you are concerned that risperidone may be causing you to experience any number of side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

There may be some noticeable effects within the first few days of taking risperidone. However, you will probably need to take risperidone for several weeks before you feel significant enough changes to your symptoms to decide if risperidone is right for you.

Risperidone can help to control your symptoms, but it will not cure your condition. You should continue to take risperidone even if you feel well. If you would like to discontinue using it, you should speak with your doctor. If you stop taking risperidone abruptly, your symptoms may return and your illness may become harder to treat.

Your starting dose will depend on a number of factors such as your age, weight, the condition that you are treating, how the medication is being administered, and more.

Risperidone comes as a tablet, an oral solution, and an orally disintegrating tablet. In some cases, the doctor may even decide that a bi-weekly injection is your best option. Read and follow the instructions on the packaging label carefully. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if any part of the instructions aren’t clear. Use risperidone only as directed.

Risperidone is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
