What are the side effects of tinidazole?

The use of tinidazole has been shown to cause side effects in some patients.

Common mild side effects of tinidazole use include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Stomach pain and gas
  • Headache
  • Metallic taste in the mouth
  • Fatigue
  • Decreased appetite

More severe side effects include:

  • Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat)
  • Seizures
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
  • Dark urine
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes

Seek medical attention immediately if you experience any severe symptoms while taking tinidazole. If you experience mild side effects that become severe or do not go away after a few days, speak to a healthcare provider right away.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before using tinidazole?

Tell your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, allergies, or other medications you are taking before starting treatment with tinidazole. This includes prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and dietary supplements, as they may interact with this drug.

Tell your provider if you are taking these medications or supplements:

  • Other antibiotics
  • Anticoagulants (blood thinners)
  • Antifungal medications
  • Cholestyramine
  • HIV medications
  • Cimetidine

You should also mention medical conditions such as:

Are there any other special instructions I should follow?

You can follow your regular diet while taking tinidazole. However, it's essential to avoid consuming alcohol during and for at least three days after completing tinidazole treatment, as it may cause severe reactions such as nausea, vomiting, flushing, and headache.

Talk to your provider about drinking grapefruit juice while taking tinidazole.

If you suspect an overdose of tinidazole or experience severe symptoms, seek immediate medical attention or contact the poison control helpline at 1-800-222-1222. Symptoms of an overdose may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and seizures.

If an individual has collapsed, is having seizures, or is unresponsive, call 9-1-1 immediately.
