Triamcinolone is the medicinal version of naturally occurring corticosteroids produced by the adrenal glands (two small glands located above your kidneys). These glands produce hormones that regulate inflammation, metabolism, stress responses, and blood pressure/ blood sugar levels. Triamcinolone helps supply synthetic versions of these steroids in instances where your body not naturally producing sufficient levels.

Triamcinolone is used to reduce inflammation. Commonly prescribed as a topical ointment or cream, this corticosteroid can treat a wide range of conditions. These are detailed below.

Topical triamcinolone ointment is used for the treatment of conditions that include:

  • Eczema
  • Dermatitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Rash
  • Inflammation/ itching

Topical triamcinolone may also be administered in a toothpaste for the treatment of mouth sores.

Triamcinolone nasal spray is used to treat symptoms of allergies that include:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny, stuffy, or itchy nose
  • Itchy and watery eyes

Triamcinolone is not indicated for use as a treatment for similar symptoms caused by a common cold. Because it is a corticosteroid medication, triamcinolone specifically targets your body’s inflammatory response to allergen exposure.

Triamcinolone is classified as a corticosteroid. It is the synthesized version of naturally occurring hormones produced by the adrenal glands, which help regulate a number of functions in the body. Corticosteroid medications work by stopping your immune system from overreacting to triggers; basically, blocking certain proteins that cause swelling and inflammation. No matter how or where it is used, triamcinolone works by inhibiting these responses - which can help ease uncomfortable systems and reduce the potentially harmful effects of inflammation.

Triamcinolone has been shown to cause some side effects. If these mild reactions do not go away within a few days, talk to your health care provider.

Common side effects of topical triamcinolone ointment/ cream include:

  • Skin dryness
  • Burning, itching, or stinging sensations on the skin
  • Small red or white bumps on the skin
  • Hair growth
  • Discolored skin

Common side effects of triamcinolone nasal spray include:

  • Headache
  • Heartburn
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea

This is not a complete list of adverse reactions caused by triamcinolone. Call your doctor right away if you experience any form of shortness of breath, skin rash, vision problems, changes in heart rate or blood pressure, severe headaches, or confusion.

As with all prescription medication, be sure to inform the prescribing doctor about any medical conditions you have been previously diagnosed with, as well as any medication/ supplements you are currently taking. In addition, let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant. Triamcinolone can interact with other forms of medication, causing potentially serious side effects.

The starting dose of topical triamcinolone will vary depending on the condition. Most of these medicated creams or ointments range in strength from .025-.5% triamcinolone. Topical medication should be applied 2-4 times a day, depending on your doctor's orders. For maximum efficacy, apply this medication to wet skin.

Triamcinolone nasal spray is usually administered via two sprays into each nostril, once a day. This dosage may increase depending on the needs of the patient. For smaller children (age 2-11), one nasal spray per nostril is generally recommended.

Do not discontinue or increase your dosage of triamcinolone without consulting your doctor first. Take the medication exactly as prescribed, and inform your doctor if you begin to experience any side effects while taking the medication.

Triamcinolone is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
