For the treatment of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections in adults, the typical starting doses may be:

• For herpes labialis (cold sores): 2 grams taken orally twice daily for 1 day.

For the prevention of recurrent HSV infections in immunocompetent adults, the typical starting dose may be:

• For genital herpes: 500mg to 1 gram taken orally once daily.
  
  

For the treatment of herpes zoster (shingles) in immunocompetent adults, the typical starting dose is:

• 1 gram taken orally three times daily for 7 days.
