About albendazole

The typical starting dose of albendazole for humans depends on the type of parasitic infection being treated, as well as the patient’s age, weight, and overall health.

In some cases, a provider may prescribe an albendazole single dose for adults, but many infections require treatment once or twice daily for several days or longer. Tapeworm infections usually require a longer course of therapy. Albendazole for kids is also weight-based, and the dose and duration will be carefully determined by a healthcare provider.

It’s important to complete the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve, to make sure the infection is fully cleared. Do not change your dose or stop taking albendazole without first consulting your healthcare provider.

Albendazole may not be appropriate for everyone. You should not take albendazole if you have a known allergy to albendazole or have experienced an allergic reaction with the drug or other benzimidazole medications.

Albendazole is not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, due to potential risk to the unborn baby. Before starting albendazole, your provider may ask for a pregnancy test. You should use an effective form of birth control during treatment and for at least three days after your last dose of albendazole to prevent pregnancy.

Albendazole is processed by the liver, so patients with liver damage, liver disease, or abnormal liver enzymes should use caution. Your provider may recommend monitoring during treatment.

Always tell your healthcare provider about your full medical history and any medications you are taking before starting albendazole.

Certain medications, like cimetidine, and even grapefruit juice, may affect how albendazole is metabolized, so discuss your diet and all medications with your provider. Avoid alcohol during treatment, as alcohol may increase the risk of liver-related side effects.

You should also avoid skipping doses or stopping treatment early, even if you feel better, unless your provider instructs you to do so. Taking the medication exactly as prescribed helps ensure the infection is fully treated.

If you experience unusual symptoms, such as severe fatigue, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine, contact your healthcare provider promptly.

Before using albendazole, inform your health care provider or pharmacist about any existing medical conditions, allergies, or other medications you are taking. This includes prescription drugs, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, and dietary or herbal supplements, as there may be drug interactions.

This medication is generally considered safe for most people, but it's essential to follow the dosing instructions on the label carefully. Taking more than the recommended dose can lead to adverse effects.

Store albendazole in its original container at room temperature, away from excessive heat or moisture. Keep the medication out of the reach of children and ensure that the bottle cap is securely closed.

If you miss a dose of albendazole, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose.

Taking albendazole as prescribed is important to fully clear the infection. If you’re unsure what to do after missing a dose, contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Taking more albendazole than prescribed may increase the risk of side effects such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, dizziness, or headache. In more serious cases, excessive dosing could increase the risk of liver-related side effects or changes in blood counts.

If you believe you have taken too much albendazole, contact your healthcare provider right away. You can also call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for immediate guidance. If you experience severe symptoms, seek emergency medical care.

You cannot buy albendazole over the counter. Albendazole is currently only available via prescription. This means that a licensed health care provider must authorize the use of this drug.
