Eletriptan is a prescription medication used to treat acute migraine headaches with or without aura. It belongs to the class of drugs known as selective serotonin receptor agonists. Eletriptan works by narrowing blood vessels in the brain and reducing substances that can trigger migraine symptoms, such as head pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound.

Eletriptan is available in its generic form or under the brand name Relpax.

This medication can only be obtained with a prescription, meaning you must have a written prescription from a licensed healthcare provider to purchase it.

Eletriptan is primarily prescribed for the treatment of migraine headaches, a neurological condition characterized by severe and recurrent headaches that can be accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound.

A warning sign (known as an aura) may appear before or with the headache. Symptoms of a migraine aura include visual phenomena, such as flashes of light or blind patches, a tingling sensation on one side of the body, or trouble speaking.

Eletriptan is used to alleviate the acute symptoms of a migraine attack and is not intended for the prevention of migraines.

Eletriptan works by targeting specific receptors in the brain responsible for migraine symptoms. It constricts (narrows) blood vessels in the brain, which helps reduce the throbbing pain associated with migraines. Additionally, eletriptan reduces the release of certain neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, that contribute to migraine symptoms.

The use of eletriptan may lead to adverse side effects.

Mild side effects associated with eletriptan may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Heartburn

More severe side effects are rare but may include:

  • Serotonin syndrome (symptoms may include agitation, hallucinations, rapid heart rate, fever, muscle stiffness)
  • Chest pain or tightness
  • High blood pressure
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sudden numbness or weakness (especially on one side of the body)
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Hives
  • Skin rash
  • Cold sweats

If you experience any of these side effects or have concerns about them, consult your healthcare provider.

Before starting eletriptan, inform your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, allergies, or other medications you are taking. This includes prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and dietary supplements, as they may interact with eletriptan.

Specifically, tell your healthcare provider if you have a history of:

  • Heart disease, chest pain (angina), heart attack, or other heart problems
  • Varicose veins
  • Blood clots in the legs
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA)
  • Peripheral vascular disease (narrowing of blood vessels)
  • Allergies to medications

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider before using eletriptan to weigh the potential risks and benefits.

Eletriptan is supplied as an oral tablet. The recommended dosing of eletriptan may vary depending on the individual and the severity of the migraine. Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dosage for your situation.

Eletriptan is typically taken as a single dose of 20 mg or 40 mg when a migraine attack occurs. A lower dose may be effective for some individuals.

Do not exceed the recommended dosage or take multiple doses within 24 hours unless directed by your healthcare provider.

Take eletriptan as soon as you experience the onset of a migraine, as it is most effective when taken early during a migraine attack.

Store eletriptan in its original container at room temperature, away from excessive heat or moisture. Keep the medication out of the reach of children and ensure that the container is tightly closed.

Eletriptan is currently only available with a prescription. A licensed healthcare provider must authorize the use of this drug.
