Emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide can cause side effects. You should talk to your healthcare provider if these adverse reactions do not go away within a few days or become severe.
Common symptoms reported when taking emtricitabine include:
- Depression or anxiety
- Heartburn
- Insomnia
- Weight loss
- Pain, burning, or tingling in the hands or feet
This is not a complete list of adverse effects – though these are the most common. Seek medical attention right away if you experience symptoms such as swelling, decreased urination, difficulty breathing, rash, flu-like symptoms, fever, or hoarseness while taking emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide.
Descovy has been issued a black box warning by the FDA due to the risk of exacerbation of hepatitis B once treatment is stopped. The Descovy label also includes a Boxed Warning regarding the risk of drug resistance with PrEP use in undiagnosed early HIV-1 infection.
As with all prescription medication, be sure to inform the prescribing doctor about any medical conditions you have been previously diagnosed with and any medication/ supplements you are currently taking before taking emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide. Emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide can interact with other forms of medication and substances and cause potentially serious side effects. This includes, but is not limited to, antiviral medications, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or naproxen, and other HIV medications containing emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide.
In addition, let your doctor know if you are planning to become pregnant, are pregnant, or are currently breastfeeding before starting treatment with this medication.
