Indapamide is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), fluid retention (edema), and other medical conditions. Indapamide belongs to a family of drugs known as diuretics, which help rid the body of excess salt and water by producing more urine.

High blood pressure is a common but serious condition that, according to the CDC, affects nearly half of all adult Americans. Drugs like indapamide can help lower blood pressure to ease the workflow of the heart and help prevent strokes, heart attacks, kidney problems, blood vessel damage, and more. While prescription medications like indapamide are effective in achieving these goals, doctors often prescribe these medicines alongside recommended lifestyle changes, like improving your diet, increasing your exercise, and abstaining from alcohol and tobacco.

Doctors prescribe indapamide to treat hypertension, either alone or in combination with other drugs, as well as salt and fluid retention (known as edema).

Indapamide belongs to a class of drugs called diuretics. These drugs cause your body to create more urine, which, simply put, flushes excess salt and water out of your body. This helps reduce swelling and fluid retention while also dilating (opening up) your veins to reduce your blood pressure and take pressure off your heart.

While there are some common side effects associated with indapamide, it is important to remember that your doctor prescribed this medication because its ability to reduce your blood pressure outweighs any adverse side effects it may cause.

You may, however, still experience some common side effects, which can include: Frequent urination Mild skin rash Upset stomach Feeling dizzy or faint.

Serious adverse effects to this medication are rare. Tell your doctor right away if you experience:

Severe skin reactions such as swelling, itching, or blistering Flu-like symptoms with a fever Sudden and severe stomach pain with diarrhea, indigestion, fever, yellowing of your skin or eyes, or swelling or tenderness of your stomach Feeling sick, confusion, dark pee, pale bowel movements, fatigue, or loss of appetite

Be sure to tell your doctor if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or plan to become pregnant. Make sure they’re aware of all medications and supplements that you are taking as well as any and all allergies and conditions that you may have (especially heart rhythm problems, diabetes, gout, or kidney, liver, thyroid, or parathyroid disease).

Blood pressure medications such as indapamide can make you dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you. Taking alcohol can worsen this effect.

This is not a complete list of indapamide’s side effects. For more information on adverse effects you may experience, please visit the National Institutes of Health’s DailyMed webpage.

Indapamide starts working within 2 hours of taking it. However, it could take up to a week to achieve a noticeable effect on your blood pressure and up to 12 weeks before the full effect is seen.

It’s important to note that indapamide helps to control blood pressure, but does not cure it. You should continue taking it even if you feel well. Talk to your doctor if you want to stop taking indapamide.

The dosage is based on the medical condition being treated and your response to the treatment. However, the usual recommended dose of indapamide for treating high blood pressure is 1.25 mg taken once daily. If the result is not satisfactory after four weeks, the daily dose may be increased to 2.5 mg. Treatment for edema generally starts at a daily dose of 2.5 mg taken once in the morning. If the response is not satisfactory after one week, the daily dose may be increased to 5 mg.

Use indapamide only as directed.

Indapamide is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
