Frequently asked questions about torsemide

Torsemide is a prescription drug that is used to treat high blood pressure and edema (fluid retention) caused by various medical problems. Torsemide helps the body get rid of excess salt and water by producing more urine.

High blood pressure is a common, but serious condition. When left untreated, it can place you at a greater risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

Torsemide is most effective when combined with healthy lifestyle changes such as eating a diet that is low in salt and unhealthy fats, maintaining a healthy weight, getting regular exercise, and abstaining from smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved torsemide to treat edema as a result of heart failure, kidney disease, or liver disease. It is also used to lower blood pressure in people with hypertension. This reduces the risk of potentially fatal cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes.

Torsemide causes your body to create more urine, which helps to flush excess salt and water out of your body. This reduces swelling and fluid retention while also dilating (opening up) your veins, which reduces your blood pressure and eases your heart’s workload.

The most common side effects associated with using torsemide include frequent urination, cough, sore throat, constipation, diarrhea, ringing in ears or hearing loss (usually reversible), headache, and upset stomach. Tell your doctor if any of these are severe or don’t go away.

Some side effects can be serious. Get medical attention right away if you experience rapid or excessive weight loss; chest pain; persistent stomach pain that may spread; vomiting blood; symptoms of dehydration or an electrolyte imbalance (such as dry mouth, thirst, drowsiness, fatigue; weakness, pain or cramps); or allergic reactions (such as hives, rash, itching, blisters, or difficulty breathing or swallowing).

Be sure to discuss any known allergies with your doctor as well as a complete list of all medications, supplements, and vitamins that you’re taking. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or if you have a history of diabetes, gout, or kidney, heart, or liver disease.

This is not a complete list of side effects. For more information on adverse conditions you may experience while taking torsemide, please visit the National Institutes of Health’s DailyMed webpage for torsemide.

It can take 4-6 weeks of taking torsemide before improvements to your blood pressure become apparent and up to 12 weeks of regular use to achieve its optimal effect.

Please note that torsemide can help to control your blood pressure but cannot cure it. You should continue to take this medication even if you feel well. High blood pressure often doesn’t have any symptoms. Speak to your doctor before discontinuing use of torsemide.

Starting doses normally fall in the 5 to 20 mg range, taken once daily. However, your dosage will be individualized to your needs based upon the condition you’re treating and other factors. The doctor will monitor your body’s response to the treatment and may adjust your dosage in intervals until a satisfactory result is attained.

Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about any parts you don’t understand. Do not take larger or smaller amounts than prescribed.

Torsemide is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
