Irbesartan is a prescription medication that is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and nephropathy (kidney disease or damage) in patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic high blood pressure.

High blood pressure is a common condition in the United States. Drugs like irbesartan can help lower blood pressure, ease the strain on your heart, and help prevent serious events like heart attacks or strokes. While prescription medications like irbesartan are effective in achieving these goals, doctors often prescribe these medicines alongside recommended lifestyle changes, like improving your diet, increasing your exercise, and abstaining from alcohol and tobacco.

Irbesartan is used alone or in combination with other medicines to treat high blood pressure. It is also prescribed to treat high blood pressure in patients with diabetic nephropathy (a complication of type 2 diabetes that causes the kidneys to not function properly). It is also occasionally used to treat heart failure (a condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to the rest of the body).

Irbesartan belongs to a class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists. These drugs work by blocking the action of a natural substance in the body that causes blood vessels to tighten and constrict blood flow. This relaxes and dilates your blood vessels, lowers your blood pressure, and increases the supply of blood and oxygen to your heart.

While adverse reactions to irbesartan are uncommon, some patients who take the drug may experience mild side effects, including:

Dizziness or a spinning sensation Headache Nausea Vomiting Diarrhea Pain in your muscles or joints

Talk to your doctor if any of these are severe or don’t go away. While serious adverse effects are uncommon, they can occur. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following:

Signs of liver problems (yellowing of the skin or eyes) Signs of a blood or marrow disorder (pale skin, fatigue, exceptional dizziness, purple spots, signs of bleeding, sore throat, or fever) An electrolyte imbalance (weakness, irregular heartbeat, pins and needles, and muscle cramps Allergic reactions (hives, blisters, swelling of the face, tongue, mouth, difficulty breathing or swallowing, etc.

Before taking irbesartan, make sure that you talk to your doctor about any allergies you may have and give them a thorough list of all medications, vitamins, and supplements that you’re currently taking. Tell them if you have ever had heart failure or kidney disease. Let them also know if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or plan to become pregnant.

Please note that this is not a complete list of all possible adverse reactions or precautions. For more information please visit the National Institutes of Health’s DailyMed webpage.

Your blood pressure will begin to stabilize within about 3 to 6 hours of taking irbesartan. However, it could take 4 to 6 weeks before the full effect is achieved.

Patients with high blood pressure often do not feel any physical symptoms, so you may not feel any different when you take irbesartan. Be assured, though, Irbesartan is effective at controlling high blood pressure. Talk to your doctor if you wish to quit taking irbesartan. It should be noted that irbesartan only manages high blood pressure - it does not cure the condition.

The starting dose of irbesartan will depend on the reason you are taking it. The usual starting dose is 150 mg to 300 mg taken once a day. The doctor may adjust the dosage during your checkup depending on your response to the medication and if any adverse effects occur. Take irbesartan only as instructed by your doctor.

Irbesartan is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
