Frequently asked questions about losartan

Losartan (generic Cozaar) is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is also used to reduce the risk of stroke in patients who have high blood pressure or heart conditions. Losartan is also used to treat kidney damage due to diabetes (diabetic nephropathy).

Losartan belongs to a group of drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). It works by relaxing blood vessels, which helps the heart pump blood more easily.

High blood pressure is a common but serious disease. When not treated, it can lead to serious complications such as heart disease, heart attacks, kidney failure, loss of vision, strokes, and more. While medications such as Losartan are effective in helping lower blood pressure, doctors often prescribe these medicines alongside recommended lifestyle changes, like improving your diet, increasing your exercise, and abstaining from alcohol and tobacco.

Losartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), including in patients who are also dealing with an enlarged heart muscle (known as left ventricular hypertrophy) or kidney dysfunction as a result of type 2 diabetes (diabetic nephropathy). Losartan may even slow the progression of diabetic nephropathy.

Losartan is also sometimes used to treat heart failure (a condition in which the heart isn’t able to pump enough blood to the rest of the body) and may be prescribed for other uses.

Losartan belongs to a class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists. These drugs work by blocking the action of a natural substance in the body that causes blood vessels to tighten and constrict blood flow. Losartan relaxes and dilates your blood vessels, which lowers your blood pressure and increases the supply of blood and oxygen to your heart.

The most common side effects of taking losartan are muscle cramps or weakness; leg, knee, or back pain; diarrhea; heartburn; and decreased sensitivity to touch. Dizziness or lightheadedness may also occur as your body gets used to the medication. Tell your doctor if any of these are severe or don’t go away.

Some side effects may be serious. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any hoarseness; swelling (particularly of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs); difficulty breathing or swallowing; or chest pain.

Be sure to tell your doctor about any allergies that you may have and provide a complete list of all medications (prescription and over-the-counter), supplements, and vitamins you are taking. Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had heart failure or kidney or liver disease. Tell your doctor, also, if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.

Please note that this is not a complete list of all possible adverse reactions or precautions. For more information please visit the National Institutes of Health’s DailyMed webpage for losartan.

You may see a decrease in your blood pressure within the first week of using losartan, but it may take 3 to 6 weeks for you to receive its full benefit.

You should continue to take losartan even if you feel well. High blood pressure often doesn’t have any noticeable symptoms. While losartan is effective at controlling your blood pressure, it does not cure it. Talk to your doctor if you want to discontinue using losartan.

The typical starting dose of losartan is 50 mg taken once a day, however your dosage may be different depending on your age, the condition that you’re treating, and other factors.

Losartan comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day with or without food. Take losartan at around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you don’t understand. Take losartan exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Losartan is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
