Frequently asked questions about Losartan-HCTZ
What is losartan/HCTZ?
Losartan/HCTZ (generic Hyzaar) is a combination of two prescription drugs - Losartan & hydrochlorothiazide - in a single form. Losartan/HCTZ is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Losartan/HCTZ is also prescribed to reduce the risk of stroke in patients who have high blood pressure and in patients who have an enlarged heart.
High blood pressure is a common but serious disease. When not treated, it can lead to serious complications such as heart disease, heart attacks, kidney failure, loss of vision, strokes, and more. While medications such as Losartan are effective in helping lower blood pressure, doctors often prescribe these medicines alongside recommended lifestyle changes, like improving your diet, increasing your exercise, and abstaining from alcohol and tobacco.
What is losartan/HCTZ used to treat?
Losartan/HCTZ is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), including in patients who are also dealing with an enlarged heart muscle (known as left ventricular hypertrophy).
Losartan/HCTZ may be prescribed for other uses. Talk to your doctor about whether Losartan/HCTZ is right for you.
How does losartan/HCTZ work?
Losartan is classified as a angiotensin II receptor antagonist. This class of drugs work by preventing blood vessels from tightening and constricting blood flow. Losartan relaxes and dilates your blood vessels, which lowers your blood pressure and increases the supply of blood and oxygen to your heart.
Hydrochlorothiazide belongs to a family of drugs known as thiazide diuretics, which are sometimes also known as “water pills.” These medicines work by stimulating your kidneys to get rid of your body’s excess salt and water via urine.
What are the most common side effects of losartan/HCTZ?
Dizziness or lightheadedness may occur as your body adjusts to this medication. Other common side effects include a cough, back pain, and upper respiratory infection (such as the common cold). Tell your doctor if any of these are severe or don’t go away.
Some side effects may be serious. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following:
Fainting
Decrease in vision or eye pain
Changes in your heartbeat
Increased/ decreased urine volume
Skin rash
Hives
Swelling of the face, lips, hands or feet
Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a medical condition, or are taking any other medications.
Please note that this is not a complete list of all possible adverse reactions or precautions. For more information please visit the National Institutes of Health’s DailyMed webpage for losartan/HCTZ.
How long does it take for losartan/HCTZ to work?
You may see some improvements to your blood pressure within the first week of using losartan/HCTZ. However, it may take 3 to 6 weeks for you to receive its full benefit.
You should continue to take losartan/HCTZ even if you feel well. High blood pressure often doesn’t have any noticeable symptoms. While this medication is effective at controlling your blood pressure, it does not cure it. Talk to your doctor if you want to discontinue using losartan/HCTZ.
What is the typical starting dose of losartan/HCTZ?
The typical starting dose is 50 mg of losartan & 12/5 mg of hydrochlorothiazide taken once a day. The dosage may be increased after three weeks of therapy to a maximum of 100 mg losartan & 25 mg hydrochlorothiazide.
