Lasix is a brand-name prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure and edema (fluid retention) associated with congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney disease. Lasix is most effective as a supplemental treatment alongside diet and exercise.

High blood pressure can damage many body parts, including the heart, brain, blood vessels, and kidneys, if left untreated. This can result in many dangerous issues, such as heart disease, heart failure, heart attack, stroke, vision loss, and kidney failure.

Lasix contains the drug furosemide, which is available in generic form. Lasix is only available via prescription from a licensed health care provider.

Lasix is used to treat high blood pressure and edema (fluid retention). High blood pressure is a dangerous—potentially fatal—condition in which the heart is met with too much resistance from blocked or narrowed arteries as it tries to pump blood and oxygen around your body. High blood pressure can lead to serious health issues, including heart attacks, heart failure, strokes, and many more complications when not treated. Nearly half of Americans have high blood pressure, and heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.

Edema is the medical term for swelling caused by fluid trapped in the body’s tissue. This swelling is often a symptom, not a condition, caused by diverse medical problems, including inactivity, venous insufficiency, heart failure, kidney disease, and more. Edema commonly leads to swelling, difficulty with movement, and difficulty breathing. When left untreated, excess fluid in the body can increase blood pressure.

By lowering fluid buildup in the body, Lasix helps lower blood pressure. It should be noted that Lasix is prescribed along with a healthy diet and physical exercise to reduce blood pressure. Doctors do not use Lasix alone to treat high blood pressure.

Lasix is classified as a diuretic (also known as a water pill). These drugs help your kidneys release extra salt and water into the urine, lowering the overall fluid levels in the body. Not only does this help reduce the symptoms of edema, but it can also help lower blood pressure by freeing up blood vessels to allow for greater blood flow.

While adverse reactions to furosemide are uncommon, some patients who take the drug may experience mild side effects. The most common side effect of diuretic medication is more frequent urination.

Additional side effects reported from Lasix use include:

  • Blurry vision
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation

Talk to your health care provider if these adverse reactions do not go away within a few days. If you experience difficulty breathing, a skin rash, a fever, or unusual bleeding or bruising while taking Lasix, seek medical attention immediately.

As with all prescription medications, inform the prescribing doctor about any medical conditions you have been diagnosed with and any medications or supplements you currently take before starting treatment with Lasix. Lasix can interact with other medicines and substances, causing potentially serious side effects.

Inform your health care provider if you have been diagnosed with the following:

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Arrhythmia
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Diabetes, gout, or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
  • An electrolyte imbalance (such as low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood)
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Breathing disorders such as asthma or emphysema

Before beginning treatment with Lasix, let your provider know if you are pregnant or are planning on becoming pregnant.

Lasix is supplied as an oral tablet. The exact dosage will vary depending on the patient’s age, body weight, and the severity of the condition requiring treatment.

If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at your next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.

Do not discontinue or increase your dosage of Lasix without consulting your doctor first. Take the medication exactly as prescribed, and inform your doctor if you begin to experience any side effects while taking the medication.

Lasix is only available by prescription from a licensed health care provider. Providers on Sesame can order Lasix for local pickup on the same day. Talk to a provider on Sesame and get your prescription ordered right away for fast and convenient pickup from a pharmacy of your choice.
