Pravastatin is used to treat high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. Do not take pravastatin if you have active liver disease, are pregnant, nursing or have a known allergy to pravastatin.

The typical starting dose of pravastatin is 40 mg once daily for adults and 20 mg for children ages 8 to 13. It is usually taken alongside a low cholesterol diet and exercise. If you have severe renal impairment and are starting pravastatin you will likely begin dosage at 10 mg a day.
