Frequently asked questions about Gemfibrozil

Gemfibrozil is a prescription drug used to treat high cholesterol. It is a type of lipid-lowering drug that is used to treat patients with hypercholesterolemia (high levels of cholesterol in the blood). Like many cholesterol drugs, gemfibrozil is most effective when used as a supplemental treatment alongside diet and exercise.

High cholesterol and high blood pressure are linked. If left untreated, high blood pressure can damage many parts of the body including the heart, brain, blood vessels and kidneys, and can place you at greater risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

Talk to your doctor about whether gemfibrozil is right for you.

Gemfibrozil is used to treat high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. Do not take gemfibrozil if you have severe renal impairment, active liver disease, gallbladder disease, are nursing, or have a known allergy to gemfibrozil.

Before taking gemfibrozil, tell your doctor if you are taking any other medication, vitamins, supplements, or herbal products, if you have a history of liver disease, diabetes, kidney disease, gallbladder disease, or heart disease, or if you are breastfeeding, pregnant, or plan to become pregnant.

Gemfibrozil belongs to a family of drugs known as fibrates. These medications work by reducing the production of triglycerides in the liver. While gemfibrozil controls low HDL and high triglycerides, it does not cure them. It is important to keep taking gemfibrozil, even when you’re feeling well, and continue use unless otherwise stated by your doctor.

This medication should be taken as a supplement to a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet, along with exercise recommendations by your dietician or your doctor.

While adverse reactions to gemfibrozil are rare, some patients who take the drug may experience mild side effects, including stomach pain and heartburn.

Rare, more serious adverse events have been known to occur. If your side effects become severe or persist, tell your doctor. If you experience muscle pain, weakness, or tenderness, or have blurred vision, you should call your doctor immediately as these adverse effects can be serious.

This is not a complete list of side effects. To learn more about adverse effects you may experience while taking gemfibrozil, please visit the National Institutes of Health’s DailyMed webpage.

In most patients, gemfibrozil begins to work within 1 to 2 hours after you take your dose. However, it may take up to three months of use for gemfibrozil to take full effect on your cholesterol levels. Even if you feel better, you shouldn’t stop taking the medication unless otherwise directed by your doctor. If you miss your dose, you should take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, however, you should skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosing schedule. You should never take a double dose if you forget to take it.

The typical starting dose of gemfibrozil is 1200 mg divided into two doses. It is usually taken twice daily (morning and evening), 30 minutes before your first and last meals of the day. The dosage prescribed to you by your doctor will depend on the severity of the condition, age, weight, and response to therapy. Do not stop taking this medicine without first consulting your doctor. The dosage is usually not increased.

Gemfibrozil is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
