Simvastatin is used in combination with diet, weight loss, and exercise to control high cholesterol. This can help reduce your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. If you have coronary artery disease, simvastatin can reduce the likelihood that you’ll need heart surgery.

Simvastatin may also be used to treat children ages 10-17 who have familial heterozygous hypercholesterolemia (a genetic condition in which cholesterol can’t be removed from the body normally).

Simvastatin works by blocking a naturally occurring enzyme that produces cholesterol in the body. This helps to slow the amount of cholesterol that your body produces, decreasing the amount of cholesterol that may build up on the walls of your arteries. This build-up (known as atherosclerosis) blocks the flow of blood and oxygen to your heart, brain, and other parts of the body and, if untreated, can lead to heart attacks, chest pain (angina), strokes, and heart disease.

While adverse reactions to simvastatin are rare, some patients who take the drug may experience mild side effects, including:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Itchy or red skin

Serious adverse effects may occur. Get immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following:

  • Changes in urine color
  • Decrease in urine volume and frequency
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Stomach pain
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle pain
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Skin rash
  • Hives
  • Swelling
  • Difficulty breathing

A very small number of people taking simvastatin may experience mild memory problems or confusion. Talk to your doctor if these effects occur.
